      How does GPA work?

      100=4.0
      or
      100=5.0?

      Simple question, but it's been pressing my mind a lot lately. I've been making good grades but I have a 2.7 GPA when it seems like everyone around me has above 3.0 GPAs. This one girl I know who failed to courses her freshman year had a 2.6. The only reason we have come up with is that I failed Latin in 7th grade with a 65. But clearly judging from the grades I have now, they would have countered one 65. I swear I wouldn't have taken that highschool credit course if I had known it worked both ways, but they didn't tell me that it would affect me if I failed. I'm a changed person now, but my past finds ways to haunt me.

      How is GPA calculated? I don't understand.

      It's averaged.

      A = 4
      B = 3
      C = 2
      D = 1

      If you got ABAD on your first report card, you would have:

      4 + 3 + 4 + 1 = 12/ 4 = 3.0

      Then, say your second had ABAA:

      15/ 4 = 3.75

      Then you would take those two, 3 and 3.75, and average them to get 3.375.

      At least I think that's how it works...

      Certain classes are ranked much higher than others. All of your AP classes have A as 5.0

      Yes, that's how you can get a QPA higher than 4.0

      Ok so then my GPA should be a 3.0...

      Hmmm, now that I think about it there was another class I was forced to take for highschool credit. But if memory serves me, I did quite well in that course.... The only explanation is that the bastard teacher gave me a lower grade that I deserved.

      This just plainly doesn't add up..... I guess I'm going to have to talk to my counselor next year and figure out what bullshit went wrong. If what you guys say is true, I should be able to save my GPA with a bit of work.

      A 3.0 is a B average.

      Exactly. My grades from the year are CAABABB. Then there are those two highschool credit courses. From what I have been told, I made a 65 in Latin. I don't know what I made in that other course, but I thought I had done well... I'm missing something here, I know I am. I gotta figure it out.

      You have a weighted (has the AP/Honors boost) and unweighted (does not) GPA. I think the highest you can get (at least in my school) is 4.9 weighted. The highest for unweighted, then, is 4.0. I think they see how many honors or AP classes you took and that is formulated into a number that is multiplied by your unweighted. I'm am pretty sure that is how it works after looking at my transcript.

      When I was in school, 4.0 was absolutely perfect. There were no classes where you could score over 4.0. Getting a 4.0 GPA meant you did the best you could possibly do. Introducing a higher possible number means that old fogies like me can't fairly compare our scores with today's students.

      Old folks are much more likely to ask "How does GTA work?"

      That is why they still have 2 GPA's. If the only GPA was the weighted one, then it would be totally unfair. Some schools today still don't have weighted GPA's.

      I showed my dad GTA 3 when it first came out and he took it from me.

      Took it to get it away from you, or took it to play for himself? I'm 44, and I'm playing the hell outta it!

      To get it away from me. I showed him all of the ways you can kill someone. I think it was the sniper headshot that got him. You know, in the old ones where the person would run around, headless, with blood shooting out of their necks? I actually found it years later in some file.

      My high school doesn't even do gpa on that scale. We just go up to 100 and go by you're actual grade of each class. Advanced classes are then multiplied by 1.1 and AP level are 1.15 so if you get a 100 in an AP class it would be like getting a 115. I have no clue why we do it that way but it's at least easier to see where you're at than trying to figure out the 4 point scale.

      I think your way is a lot smarter. Why even have letter grades? an 89 is the exact same as an 80. There is a lot of extra work in there. It seems pretty pointless to me when you can just use the numbers.

      It's complicated. Seems a bit unnecessary to me, but so long as I get something acceptable I guess it doesn't matter.

      Most colleges do not do this GPA weighing. Taking Calc5 will effect your GPA the same a Psychology 101. I understand why the HS level does it though. You no longer compete against the entire school in college.
