I think it has made me less afraid of death. I think it makes a lot of sense and I'm glad I heard the quote.

I think after death is the same as before birth, even though you've made a difference in the world and your ashes/remains still exist.

Death, life, then death again. That's what he's trying to get through.

Yes, but it's innacurate, going on the fact that you are nonexistent before you are born.

Still, as a person, you are nonexistant after death (technically) although you did exist at one point.

No, you as a physical being exist after death. You're just in a different form. lAw of conservation of matter. matter never goes away, it just changes.

Fair enough, good point. But still it's not like that state after death is any different to you then before birth, am I right?

Well, it is different. You still have your body waste and body sitting around. Used. But spiritualy i guess it's sorta the same, except that we have no idea what happens when we die.

Once the entirety of your friends, family, extended family, and acquaintances die you'll become nonexistant because no one will ever know who you were.

Are you really just a set of changing circumstances?

      Labels, and behaviours?

How futile, to cling to the everchanging.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

But not physically nonexistant. Matter never goes away. Yes, socially, you will be nonexistant, but not literally.

Socially, mentally, emotionally... you will be literally nonexistent.

Sure, matter never does go away, so think of this: what were you comprised of before you were born? If matter only changes, then you were really something before (which, if you think about it, you were - sperm), and the term nonexistence doesn't really exist.

      So which is it.

Well you would be a zygote before you pop out. What were we compromised of before we were born? Depends at what stage. BS, or PS. (Before sex, post-sex)

You were nothing before the perticular egg and sperm were developed. Just a probability of genes and what have you.

Yes, but where does the mind begin? When do you become you?

What, when the mind fully develops?

Well, literally, you exist forever after you are born. Maybe not your mind, by definatly the matter you take up.

      What was born?

Awareness is prior to birth of the body

So what are you that is aware, if not the body?

This awareness recalls this bodys conception

Therefore this body cannot be "me"

As it cannot be aware prior to its birth

Right. So, the body becomes you right when you are born. and before your parents met, you didn't exist, so you couldn't be dead.

      I was mostly kidding.

I think everyone has a few memories from their infant/toddler years, but that's before anything actually becomes a consistent stem of consciousness.

Whenever I walk through a cemetery I think that those people can no longer do anything to change the world, but I can.

The best part about death is that we either won't know we died or we will go to a better place (hopefully).

Memories from before 3-4 years tend to be confabulations. Your memories of 0-2 years are empty so the mind makes up stuff to fill the gap.

Anyway, regardless of whether our matter goes on forever, I think Mark Twain is trying to say something to the effect that we don't know what it was like before birth anymore than we know what it will be like after death so why let it bother us?
