how many of you are offended? ...

how many of you are offended by this image... how many of you would scoff if you saw one hanging in the back of a pick-up truck... how many of you associate this image to the imprisonment of a race... how many of you listen to your history teachers?

personally i'm tired of the stigma that follows the flag. the flag doesn't represent slavery... there's so much more there, yet people automatically associate it with slavery. -- granted, for the most part, the people who bear this flag are ignorant mother fuckers but i would have to say anyone who sees this flag as the symbol of oppression is, in turn an ignorant bastage as well.

      views? and go.

Well, I'm all for the south's cause in the civil war. The war was not about slavery.

I think usually when people display that image, they're trying to shock and/or offend, so I tend to ignore them. If I were black, I wouldn't be too comfortable around people sporting Confederate flags--white supremacy was a basic value of the Confederacy, and the economic and social system they were fighting to preserve was built upon the forced labor of black slaves.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

It depends on what context the Confederate flag is used in. On one side, it is a piece of history. If you live in a state that was a Confederate State, I feel that displaying the confederate flag is acceptable, but if you do not, or were not at least born in a southern state, it is just a sign of ignorance and racism. I don't know about you guys, but I live in Kentucky, and in the Civil war, we were split. The part of Kentucky I live in was not confederate, but you see all these idiots who've never even been out of the county sporting a Rebel Flag. Total ignorance. Like most things, it can be acceptable, but there is a correct time and place for it.

white supremacy was an underground value of orthodox protestants (catholics/christians) not necessarily a trait solely found in the south. they were not fighting to keep slaves... they were fighting in hopes of giving more power to the individual states rather than the federal government. slavery was a sub-topic... not to mention the "freedoms" given to blacks in the north were laughable and superficial... many continued lives as indentured servants working their asses off for next to nothing while still being treated as a sub-human by their glorious northern buddies in arms.

the flag is the symbol of rebellion. the symbol of people thinking for themselves (relatively) and questioning authority.

Well ask yourself this, are you offended by the Germanic Heritage that is the Nazi flag? The confederate flag should be banned, the south was (and to an extent still is) the enemy, it tried to destroy the union, Many southerners still believe in slavery and Segregation--hence the needed excuses to support the flag. it's bad enough that the south has not progressed with the rest of the country as seen in florida in 2000 and the misissippi elections.

Why do you think they wanted more power to the states? To this day states rights just means do to them as you please, as we are seeing with gay marriage. To say it is a symbol of rebeliion is risible. Hello what do you think this is?

The founding fathers were intellectual rebels, who dared dream. Allbeit they were not perfect, many were indeed slave owners, but the north grew by leaps and bounds and the south to this day has not caught up. Interracial marriages were illegal in Alabama untill 2000, Black voters are being harassed in florida right now. For someone who is defending the south and it's disgusting heritage, you denigrate northern 'freedom?' It's like saying killing A few Iraqi civillians isn't so bad, because they were worse under sadaam. Go to germany and try to find a swastika, sensible cultures, don't vaunt over a deplorable past.

I'm offended not by the flag itself, but the stupidity and idiocy that it symbolizes. Let's face it: the south is full of inbred white-trash douche-bags. They fear change and are afraid to move on, so they continue to practice age old doctrines (white supremacy, in breeding, watching cars go in circles, rebellion, etc.) They are dead-set against change, and I believe that the best possible tactic is to unleash the smallpox.

Now however true that may be for some people its definately not true for all of them. That was based on the past itself there are just as many people like that now in the north as there are in the south.

i think it as a redneck thing and the south. no more. i hate what the south did to the African Americans but thats why i draw the line at a redneck/south thing. i think people make to big a deal about the flag. i mean at my school its band, u cant wear it or you get in major troble even if its on ur car in the school parking lot. yeah i can see why people do make a big deal about it but still. some people do hold it differently then others.

The confederate flag did not represent slavery. This is what they teach you in school when youre young and gullible. We did not go to war to free the slaves. That was the publci reason to keep other countries from joining the south...political correctness you know. Many people in the south opposed slavery and anted that to change. The north was upset to see half of its economy running away, so they pretended to care about slavery as a battle cry. Just like how we went to war to free the Iraqis.

you're making some very broad ranged assumptions there christ was a socialist... giving power to the states had nothing to do with slavery... it has nothing to do with gay marriage... it has to do with the states knowing what’s best for them. republicans shoot for less power in the federal government... it isn't some scheme made up so they can ban gay marriages in as many states as possible... honestly, get your head out of your ass.

the nazi flag was a symbol of terror... it was the symbol of a fascist ruler... the rebel flag was flown by people questioning the decisions made concerning their rights. it was, and still is, a legitimate symbol of rebellion. the flag was flown to show an allegiance to certain political ideals... the smallest of which was slavery. you won't find a swastika in germany because, they don't have the same rules as we do... we have the constitution, maybe you should think about that before you wrap yourself up in our nations flag and call the south ignorant.

i won't lie, many people who fly the flag have certain political and social ideals... but not everyone... and when you generalize the whole south as being stupid you're instantly a hypocrite in my eyes.

don't think that i adhere to any of the social ideals that tend to follow the stigma of the rebel flag. i'm pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, pro-equality... whatever you want to label it, but i hate when i hear some ditz rambling on about how offensive the flag is when her knowledge of it's history and purpose is that which her history teacher led her to believe.

      think for yourself.

I am not american myself, but it's going to take more than a flag to offend me...

As for slavery, all I have to say is that the U.S. wouldn't be the richest nation in the world if it hadn't been because of it. There is nothing that I wish more than slavery had never taken place, as it is completely against humanity and it's practice, along with WWII, indeed made the US the most powerful nation in the world.

More importantly, it also promoted the new disguised form of slavery that we now have to endure with. Many will deny it, many will refuse to see it, but it is there. We are not as free as we think we are, we may not have actual chains binding us, but we surely are conditioned to by Them in a way in which we feel as though we have a choice, when in reality we do not...

The most perfect system I have ever seen: If no one knows they are not free, then there will be no rebellion, now would there?
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...
