      Computer Sitting position

How do you guys sit in your computer chair, what position do you usually sit in and how far from the mouse & keyboard do you usually sit?

      Why?

I'm asking this because at my job I am on the pc for about 8 hours everyday, and I sit up as straight as possible and keep the monitor at a distance, and the keyboard & mouse very close.

For some odd reason, my shoulders...the tops of them get this BURNING pain...like some injected thermite into my shoulders, No matter what position I sit in this pain persists, its been persisting for a good 3 months or so, and its REALLY starting to negatively effect me.

I will see a chiropractor soon hopefully, cause this pain is UNBEARABLE, I can hardly work anymore.
I would rather die on my feet then to live on my knees.

The monitor should be just above level with your eyes. Your keyboard should be just above where your elbows hang. That's the proper position for a regular computer setup. No one that I know does that though

Yeah, that's why most people don't do that

I assumed that he was using a desktop because he mentioned keyboard, mouse, and monitor separately.

      How do I, personally sit?

      at home...
      lounged back in my seat
I swear, I'm at 45 degrees right now,

(expensive receptionist's chair, nabbed by my dad from his workplace about 5 years ago - chair still going strong)

      it's great

keyboard propped at 45 degrees, also, with a wooden block glued to my desk - 3'' high and 12'' long
      keyboard solid as a rock

arm rests of chair positioned so they support my arms all the way along

monitors (x3) positioned up high (stacked on big books), angled down

I can (and on rare occasions - university dissertation, etc., actually have) sat here for 36 hours straight with no issues

      screw proper seating positions
      this is where it's at
      seriously

Possible future plans include cutting a hole in the back-board on my desk and padding it, so I can stretch my legs out
as my knees do ache after a while, from being bent

at work, I obviously sit in a conventional way
but I find very uncomfortable for extended periods

      Yes, very lovely.

I get the same burning pain guerilla, I think it's because of my chair though. I should change it one of these days.

I think current research relatively safely indicates that persistent sitting in a very straight position is detrimental to ergonomic health more than anything, contrary to what was previously thought. You would have to Google this for further information. The rest is still right though (chair/desk height etc.).

i generally use my laptop on the floor of my room (desk collapsed after a unfortunate accident involving playing football in my room), so i lay on my side on the floor with the laptop in front of me, or if we are talking desktop i just learn forward on the desk, or lean back in the chair when not typing, the screen is about eye level, i haven't really done this for prolonged periods of time so no clue if i would get aches after a bit.

I lean back (my chair can lean way back), put my left elbow on the arm rest, and the other one just relaxes across my body. I can easily type this way. And I'm kind of slouched. I don't know, that's just how I am right now, sometimes I'm in different positions. Remember, work is different from home.

I have a laptop, and no chair, so I generally just hurt. I sit on the edge of my bed with my laptop on a small card table. Right now, as usual, my left elbow is on my knee, my hand supporting my chin, I'm slouched over, my right hand is typing, and my head is well below the top of my screen.

I really need to work on this, maybe get a chair. Sometimes I sit cross-legged on my bed, back supported with one of those chair-shaped pillows and my regular pillow, laptop on the bed in front of me. Sometimes I put it in my lap, but that way my legs get tired too quick. Gah, I need to rethink this. My shoulders and back are in horrible condition.

I have a strange position, I put my lower back as close to the back of the chair as possible, but my upper body rests on my desk. Also usually I rest my neck on a bottle of a book so it doesn't get sore. It doesn't look like something you would want to do at a job, but IT is comfortable for me at my home.

Your shoulders might be hurting because it's a strain on your back to be straight like that at all times, I think. I would put a little pillow at the bottom of your back.

Hmm, the odd thing with me is, if im in the sitting position in any chair, no matter how comfy, my shoulders burn like hell...and my job involves 8 hour shifts on the computer...how wonderful!!

The shoulder pain is much rather caused my stress rather than bad positioning, I tell you. Stress equals adrenaline, and adrenaline makes your muscles contract, many a times without you noticing or caring to relax. Bad positioning causes problems to the back, not shoulders. Either way, as long as you don't bother much about sitting in a position that uses your muscles instead of your bones to hold still, you will be fine. Use your bones, not your muscles. The back of the chair is there for a reason: use it instead of your muscles.

Finally, don't believe what most doctors say: they get money if you have problems. It's a vicious cycle.

i sit hunched over, leaning with my hand holding my head up, keyboard and mouse right above my lap, and monitor just below eye level, about 2 feet away.

You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.
