      Chess

I know most people associate chess with geeks, but if you ever learn the game it is fascinating beyond what most would think. Aside from playing it it is interesting just talking about it. Each person adds their own personality to the game.
      Anyone here play any Chess?

I used to, but then got depressed because everyone I knew could beat me (even my younger sis!). I'm better at checkers =D

I know how to play chess; but rarely do. Kid from South Korea taught me.

I am not very good either. I cannot think several moves ahead. But the more you play the more you realize that it has a beginning, middle, and end game. At first I was like - what the hell are you talking about? There are so many possibilities and with each move it multiplies. Quite fascinating.

I used to play it and i agree. Its quite a fascinating game. So much thinking and planning is required in order to win. I feel like it stimulates the brain. I dont play it anymore since i used to play it with bastards but I will never forget how to play it...

Hey, howetzer, this thread reminds me. I don't work where I used to anymore, so I should be able to play chess with you, as this job does permit the use of java applets. Anyway, the catch is I am online from 2am-10am CT(well mountain while the daylight savings time is on). If you are ever online at those hours let me know, so we can finally play some good ol' fashion chess. Anyone else that would also like to play me I am more than willing to do so....
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

Oh boy, do I play chess!

I rarely play it anymore, but recently I downloaded a program cos I was interesting in playing some. My games are usually quite quick, because I often 'trade' pieces (ie, sacrifice my knight to take their knight)

      Timeless is so true.
The more you get into the game the more you realize you are missing Ignorance is bliss. It seemed much more simple when I began. I would not change it!

I used to play chess all the time... played quite frequently for my local chess club, even won 300 dollars in a tournament once (2nd place!)... I really wish I had more time to do it, but college takes up most of my time (computer science majors get more work than you'd like to imagine), and I worked 9-5 most of this summer, so I hardly ever get a game in more than once every few weeks.

It's really sad, I love the game, but I never have the time to play (I like to play with the longer time controls, 60-90 mins per game, allthough speed chess is fun every once in a while).

To me it can become a whole differant game when you have longer time controls. I just don't have the abilty to see things that fast in speed chess. Then again I miss my share after 10 minutes.

It really does become a completely different game when the time controls are slowed down, even most Grandmasters (well, at least the one that I had the chance of meeting) agree. The game becomes more about intuition and subconscious pattern recognition in the smaller time controls. Which is why I always prefered the longer time controls... for me chess should be a contemplative game, in which deep stratigies are developed, that's what makes it so much fun in my opinion, speed chess just dosen't allow that.

I can't remember if it was in the under 9 or or under 8 catogery, but when I was around that age, for all those officially ranked players in the under 8/9 category I was thirty first highest ranked out of all the U8 in the nation, 31 out of a lot! I was also ranked best in my city. I love to play chess!! My dad taught me. He uses the game as a spacial stimulant. He works on a computer writing all day so when he gets home he likes to expand his mind with spacial activity. I still love to play on line. I usually play fast games 3 minutes only, but lately I've been playing only 1 minute games or 10 second with 1 second per move games. I really don't think that short games are all that bad. They are very challenging and make you think and react on your feet. It makes the games more fun. But if I see a place where there could've been an interesting combo I"ll go back and check it out. My dad and I also use chess as a mental regulator. My chess rating soars when all I eat is soybeans and green tea or tumeric... lol I love chess with a deep passion!

I used to play it. I won a blitz-chess tournament too a couple of years ago. (Where each player gets 1 min on their clocks).
