      Shaving

I decided to make a thread about shaving, why you may ask?

Well here's why, we all have our shaving methods and tricks or 'secrets'

I will just go ahead and ask all of you how you shave

(this goes for guys or girls, any type of shaving...face or body)

I'm mainly asking for face shaving tips...I've been shaving since I was nearly 17 years old...the curse of the sicilian bamboo hair.

Anyways, this is how I shave:

I first wash my face up with a scrubbing agent, apricot scrub is what I use...then afterwards I take a small towel and soak it in really hot water, but not too hot or it will burn you.

Then I let the towel sit on my neck and face for a good minute or two to warm up the skin to open up the pores.

Then, I rub in some moisturizer into the skin before anything else...I let it dry a little bit.

Then I fill up my sink with hot water, and leave my razor in there (gillete fusion 5-blade)

I soak my face again with hot water and apply the shaving cream making sure my skin is wet and stays wet.

Then I shave going with the grain of the hair, shaving slowly and in small segments..I don't recommend shaving a long path, do small ones.

Then after im done with that, I re-moisturize my face...re-apply shaving cream and shave going against the grain, I slowly and gently shave against the grain, making sure to not press to hard on the blade head.

Then I rinse once done, aftershave and moisturizer

Done, well not exactly done...I always apply makeup after but thats just me.

So, how do you all shave?

I'm asking because, as careful and precise as I shave, I always end up with razor burn and nicks and cuts....Also alot of times when the hair grows back I develop acne on my chin for some reason...literally like 10 micro-pimples pop up after the hair grows back...I can't seem to stop it!

I've been using nivea shaving gel and come to the conclusion that I should find a new shaving cream/gel

I looked up some things about shaving and alot of sites recommend an Aloe Vera shaving cream which I'm going to give a shot.
I would rather die on my feet then to live on my knees.

You're opening your pores and covering your face with all sorts of chemicals, and you wonder why you get a reaction...

lol, the reaction is caused by metal blades ripping apart at your face, the chemicals are far from the main cause of irritation.

What do you use to shave then? natural stuff? or do you not have facial hair?

I used to use cream, but recently (as in, two months ago (I'm going for a beard at the moment )) I just wet my face and shaved.

Strangly enough, I almost never cut myself.

Saftey razors are terrible for me, so i just use a set of electric barber's shears. I set then for zero hair length, cut 180 degrees from the grain (so that the blades lift the hair before cutting, for a closer shave). I start under my neck, then trim my cheeks, upper lip, and the bit below each side of my lower lip. For the rest, I add the combguard on the shears to trim between 3/4 centimeter and 1.5 centimeter (3/4 for the front of my face, 1.5 for the edge where it needs to be thicker or it looks patchy). With the shears, I don't have to use shaving cream, and I don;t usually get shaving burns (unless the battery is dying, or the blades overheat from not taking a break halfway through when shaving for the first time in a while).

Yeah, I just shave.... Not much to it, I just pick up my razor and run it along my face, sometimes completely dry. If I have lots of time though and I'm feeling a little to scruffly, I'll use shaving gel and then shave, but generally I shave dry. I've been shaving since I was 15, and I've yet to cut myself....

all i do is warm up a rag under hot water and let it rest on the chin, it softens up the hairs to! then foam it up and shave it all off, i HARDLY EVER cut myself or get razor burn and stuff

as for other places, i do the same thing pretty much

Well aren't you guys all lucky to be blessed with weak facial hair, I'm thinking about getting it all laser removed permanently...I mean really I need to get rid of this hair forever cause i'll never be able to look like I want to with a perma-5oclock shadow

Should use cold water. Hot water opens up your pores and is just asking to get them clogged and irritated. The point is to close your pores when you're shaving, not open them.

I just wet - cream - shave twice

I'm not too careful about it, I almost hack away at myself. I've found that it's only on the neck that I tend to have problems, so I tend to let that stay a little rugged. I don't use a mirror either. Learn to do it by feel, it's probably a lot easier that way.

After that I clean it up with some oil-free face cream from Neutrogena, then dry and apply some alohol-free toner, then moisturize with oil-free moisturizer. All products are meant for acne.

Um...if im not mistaken opening the pores loosens the hair and makes it softer...which makes it easier for the blade to cut...

I highly recommend using warm water...cold is BAD IDEA. Opening the pores doesn't mean they get clogged...if you use a facial scrub it rubs away all dead skin and dirt or anything.

Closing your pores makes the hair stiffer and harder to pull out and harder to cut...making your blades dull faster...kind of counter-productive.

I tend to agree with this. I shave with a razor and water, and I very very rarely cut myself and never develop razor burn or acne from it.

All the moisturizing and babying is giving you sensitive skin and opening your pores to fill them with chemicals, and more importantly make-up, is giving you acne.

You don't want to pull the hair out, you want to cut it off at the surface. Pulling it out is what gives you ingrown hairs. If you use cold water, it gets the hair to stand up more, making it easier to cut it off at the base; meaning less strokes.

You could need a better razor. I do it in the shower, makes things easier. I found that women's shaving gel works best, shaving creme just sucks for me. I go with the grain first, then against it afterwords to smooth it down. Then moisturize.

For my legs (I'm a distance runner ) I only go against the grain, going with it doesn't do anything.

This same method works flawlessly for me. I splash a handful of water on my face (usually cold water), wet the razor, then shave. Going with the grain has given me no problems. Personally, I don't see the need for shaving cream, or after shave, water works fine.

Shaving with the grain on the legs doesn't work for me either lol its like shaving air...the hair is so like pulled to one direction its impossible to shave it lol...

I'm opting for nair soon...for my body that is not my face!..lol

      Hopefully the stuff works.

I'm also opting for laser hair removal on my face...If its not TOO expensive that is.

I wash my face with cold water (not cool water, really cold.) Then I use some shaving cream or lather some soap if I'm out of cream.

Then wash with cold again, apply lather, shave, wipe, wash, dry, done.
      Bollocks.

Its so strange how many of you use cold water which makes the hair harder to cut, warm water always works better...its scientific fact actually but hey its your face...if your face can handle it then thats cool.

My skin is almost as sensitive as my personality...and I thought that was impossible...my skin reacts very badly to any abuse whatsoever.
