The Government Screws us at every turn.

So I had a slightly less than brilliant idea yesterday. I thought to myself, "Hey; a simple way to invest my money in case of cataclysmic economic crash is to just get some money in the form of those gold dollar coins. Gold will always be worth something!"

Well I thought this was a great idea, and planned on getting some of my paycheck in gold coins every week-say ten dollars out of every paycheck.

Today I thought I should check to see how much gold is actually in those coins since I know most coins are actually a composite of several different metals. It turns out that there is no actual gold in the gold dollar coins.

Thats right, the dollar coin consists of 88.5% copper, 6.0% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel. I love how all of our currency is worthless paper and almost worthless hunks of metal. We're like ignorant natives trading trading all our food, time and effort for shiny glass beads.

The ability to happily respond to any adversity is the divine.

157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

Instead, put that ten dollars in an envelope in a safe box every month, and when you have enough, go buy a gold ingot.

Or just use it to buy cigarettes. They're only going up in price, so in five years you can probably get three times what you paid for them. Obviously it is best if you don't smoke.

Wow.... I'm a little stunned. I mean, at the false advertising of the coins. Silver coins ARE actually silver though, right? I wonder why in the hell they'd choose to call any coin that isn't gold a 'gold dollar coin'. Makes me want to start calling my unleaded gas DIESEL instead to see what kind of profit I can make on the difference if I sold it.. I'd get taken to court eventually, and be tempted to use this: "I don't see what the problem is. The federal government made it OK when they started selling us fake gold."

I could see a nice counter-lawsuit against the federal establishment lined up after something like that. That, in all seriousness, does not sound like a bad idea. Suing the assholes for false advertising. Or, let me guess, they probably don't allow us to sue them for things like that?

There are actual gold bullion coins that you can purchase from the US Mint, but they are several hundred dollars a piece. They even have platinum coins if you had enough money to go in that direction and a way to get them. They're not for public purchase (so they say). Here's a little more information: http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/..._eagle_bullion

The "Golden Eagle" uncirculated gold coins are $125 if you purchase from the US Mint. It says they're 91.7% gold.
