Sit tight, a bigger bang is coming

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle4749224.ece

THE vast new Cern particle collider has only just hummed into life, but physicists are already drawing up plans for a still larger machine to answer the questions even Albert Einstein was unable to resolve.

The International Linear Collider (ILC) would be a machine up to 31 miles long, comprising two giant “guns” that would accelerate electrons and particles of antimatter called positrons to near-light speeds before smashing them together. The results could open up some of the hottest topics in physics, such as the existence of extra dimensions, the origins of gravity and even how the big bang – the event that created the universe – happened.

I spit my drink out laughing after reading the "still larger" part of the first paragraph. Damn awesome.

All this just goes to show that the vast majority of scientific investigation consists of smashing things together to see what happens, or what is inside. This dates back to the ground breaking experiments of smashing a piece of iron on a rock to create a spark and smashing a rock on another rock to find a geode inside.

The ability to happily respond to any adversity is the divine.

Thats nothing in the grand scheme of things. England alone spends £1 billion on just cosmetic products every year. The oil tycoon turned renewable energy invester, T. Boone Pickens, is preparing to spend 12 billion USD just on one wind turbine farm. Big progress has a big price tag, at least compared to an individual's standards. £4 billion is pennies on the global scale, which is where the LHC sits.

Yeh, the 4 billion they get for the construction anyway is handled by scraping for money. Think about the fusion plant project going on in France right now. I think it was about 10 billion they needed, they said they would need global funding for it.

Personally, I couldn't care less about the machine. I'd rather spend the money on something useful rather than potentially destroying the world. Call me stupid that way :/

I wouldn't be surprised if some scientists are turned on by particle physics.

You're stupid.

Science espically quantum mechanics has produced alot of things that you use everyday. Who knows what the LHC or the ILC will produce. Also, I think particle physicist don't won't to destroy the world, they know what their doing.

I wouldn't be surprised if some scientists are turned on by particle physics.
I guess if you have no girlfriend and our anti-social, then yes you would. Saying that the machine is built by engineers. Only about 1.4% of the staff at LHC facillity are particle physicists. Ironically, there are proberly about zero mathmaticians at CERN.

The planet Earth exhibits all of these properties and therefore can be considered alive and its own single organism by the scientific definition.

does the planet Earth reproduce, well no unless you count the moon.

4 years for the drawing up of plans? Are they kidding? 12 Goddamn years to build this thing? Jesus Christ these bastards are slow.

12 years to build was purely a guess on my part, based on how long it took to get the LHC finished.

The LHC was cleared for construction in 1995, and construction didn't actually begin until 1998, and was completed 10 years later obviously. The LHC project reused a preexisting 27km tunnel from an earlier project however, and that tunnel took 5 years to construct from 1983 to 1988, so really, 15 years of construction have gone into all that makes the LHC.

And add to the fact that they're probably going to have to go at least 50+ yards deeper than the LHC is, due to the size/much higher radiation emission/explosive potential if a magnet fails.
