Lolcats originated on 4chan through the caturday meme, where users simply posted tons of cat pictures. Eventually people started adding lines to funny looking pictures and thus the meme was created. Then ICanHasCheeseBurger site took the meme and made it way bigger.
I preferred the documentary.
