I see music as an art that is not limited to just lyrics, voice, guitars and drums.

Absolutely not. Music is a large part of my life, and my answer is all of the above. I listen to metal and classical, so liking only a certain instrument is kind of pointless in this case.

its not pointless, a guitar alone can make the best music, for example, the artist known as buckethead, he plays a guitar, no lyrics, no band.

Yes but I listen to music with many aspects, that is all I was saying. To fully enjoy complex songs one must enjoy all of it; well maybe that is incorrect; you can enjoy just one part, but it seems quite a waste to me, unless of course you are listening to a solo.

Yeah, the poll is a little lacking. But I don't think a poll is even appropriate for this question, it's really (well, for me at least) a blend of everything that makes music what it is for me. Some songs I like the vocal styles, some songs it may be the bass, or maybe a bitchin' guitar riff. I guess it's all about the mood I'm in and the general atmosphere of the piece.

Yeah, unless you count Deli Creeps.

Most of the stuff I listen to is guitar-centered too, stuff rarely containing lyrics unless it's something like Dream Theater. And you might be able to guess my favorite artist.

Lol I was joking about the money bitches & hoes thing dude. I like many different kinds of music. I started off liking classic rock from the 60's and 70's, but now I mostly like 80's stuff, and a good bit of classical music and some metal. But I can dig anything really. I have funk from the 70's, old school rap, 80's pop, some jazz, whatever. It's all good.

I only can't stand listening to punk, techno, country or freeform.

buckethead is good but my favourite is metallica, kirk hammet is so good on the guitar, i just love it, i rather smooth songs rather than ones where the guitarist is hitting anything he can find on the guitar, and the singer aint singin, hes growlin, i much rather songs like "one" and "the day that never comes" both by metallica.

dont get me wrong, the singer is very good aswell and the band wouldnt be complete without the drums etc. and the lyrics in some of their songs are meaningful, but guitar is my life.

although metallica is my fave band, my fave guitarist is actually slash(my avatar pic) who played for guns 'n' roses and now velvet revolver.

      Everything.

I love classic rock, hard rock, rap, hip-hop, pop, trance... Anything really that is good.
This was that cult, and the prisoners said it had always existed and always would exist, hidden in distant wastes and dark places all over the world until the time when the great priest Cthulhu, from his dark house in the mighty city of R'lyeh under the waters, should rise and bring the earth again beneath his sway.

      Country rules! Go Merle!

No, seriously, I have a very eclectic taste. I really enjoy Opera, with Andrea Bocelli being my favorite. But I can handle any type of music, even *gulp* rap. But I love '80's and Italian opera.

I am fond of all types of music, even some of the rap. I like anything with a good sound and an interesting meaning.

Daft Punk is rather limited as to how many lyrics they use in their songs. However, when they do this, in addition to the music they use, it seems to centralize on a certain emotion. "One More Time" is one of celebration; "Something About Us" is probably my favotite love song.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Avril Lavigne are more diverse with their lyrics, but when they add in a nice musical accompanyment (and a 60 second guitar solo for RHCP in many of their songs), it all comes out quite well. Heck, even the occasional classical song is good: "William Tell Ouverture", "Blue Danube Waltz", and the always exciting Can-Can!

Music obviously is an art. But you seem to have an extremely narrow-minded view of music as a whole. If you understood the complexities of music i'm sure you would be able to appreciate much more than Rock and just the Guitar as an instrument.

Plus a lot of music nowadays is very reliant on a heavy usage of effects which isn't what music should be about in my opinion. But music is changing and right now all i can see in the popular music world is crap being pumped out that tries to appeal to those with very simple minds and a very little understanding of music in general.

      This.

Such is why music like baroque and tech death always get bad reviews; nobody takes the time to train their ears for it.

It is pretty basic really; if you make simplistic crap like Jingle Bells that everyone can understand, they will buy an entire album for that one song, get tired of it in a month and buy the next crappy jingle. It's a very easy way to make money.

This is not to say that the two extreme examples of complex music that I used above are the only good forms of music; I am just showing how good music is not going to sell very much or be promoted at all. This is why people need to seek out music rather than be led around by fads. You can never say what your favorite form of music is until you have heard it. By "heard" I mean the obvious, you listen to it, but also it is important that you understand it. This does not always happen on the 1st, 2nd, or even 50th try depending on the complexity of the music in question.

If I have read one book and you ask me what my favorite book is, what do you think my answer will be?

I like everything about music. If there is something in a piece of music that is only mediocre, it shouldn't be there

I like just about all music.

Yea, there's this crazy 20th Century orchestral piece, The Rite of Spring, by Igor Stravinsky, took me a few listens to really like it...now I freaking love it
Though, it might have taken me longer if I hadn't been hearing the Disney version since I was a kid (It's the dinosaur song in Fantasia)

Mmmm I like melodies mainly. It's complicated really, the textures are important too. Lyrics don't have so much of an effect unless they're outstanding; Loveless is my favourite album of all time and it doesn't have lyrics. It's just got incredible melodies and experimental textures.

Music is so much more that just an instrument playing. What a song have to have to make me like it is the fusion of interesting rythms, catchy or beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics.... Naturally i don't like hip-hop,rap and other mainstream stuff. I don't like much classical stuff either, except for Globus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc56moy0poA , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNYc0...eature=related) which is a mix between classical and rock (or "epic rock" as it is being called) and feature a symphonic orchestra, a choir and a rock band.
