Buy a decent shampoo and conditioner. I've heard that Mane-N-Tail products are good for that sort of thing.

Oh, and don't use a flat iron or blow dryer. If a flat iron is part of your hair style then try to get a hot oil treatment every month or so. Hell, hot oil treatment is nice even if you don't flatten or blow dry.

Also, scalp massages increase blood flow to your head area, so maybe like a scalp massage with a Vitamin-E oil of some sort. Vitamin-E is good for hair as it is, but I've heard that it also can increase how fast your hair grows.

You can help your hair remain undamaged but I dont think you can do much about the growth rate.
      - Are you an idiot?
      - No sir, I'm a dreamer.

That's correct. Nearly everyone's hair grows at a fixed rate of 1/2 inch per month, or 6 inches per year. Nothing you can do will make it exceed this rate, and unless you become severely malnourished, it wont drop below this rate. Many people believe that their hair grows particularly fast or slow, but this is an illusion. I used to believe that my hair grew particularly quickly, but then I started growing my hair out during my freshman year of college. Suddenly I was believing that my hair actually grew particularly slowly. Basically most people tend to believe that their hair does exactly what they don't want it to do. (For the record, I grew out my hair for nearly two years; by the time that I chose to cut it back to a short style, the hair just above my forehead had reached my collar bone.)

Here is a good collection of articles about long hair on men. It covers everything from hair growth and maintenance to social attitudes toward long-haired men.

Um, have good genetics? I think hair growth is constant for a person.

But DuB, are you sure about it growing about the same for everyone? Mine's always grown really fast. I've been growing it about a year and a half and it's over a foot right now.
157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

My hair's growth rate seems to change. Sometimes it'll take forever to grow an inch, othertimes I'll gain ridiculous amount of length in a month.

Mine has only made it 4.5 inches in a year. I suffer bad depression though, which could have an effect. =(

you should see how long my hair is getting, my tips would be is to not use shampoo too much, sulfates dry out the hair (sodium laureth sulfate)

I use shampoo that doesn't have that ingredient. Just get once a month trims if you want the hair to grow the way you want it to..in my case im not sure how long im gonna have mine and its really curly so..im not sure how to style it..

Also, biotin is required for hair growth, omega 3 fatty acids make the hair and skin smooth so try to find a vitamin or food with biotin and get some omega 3-6-9 if you can

that is neccessary to make hair grow and be smooth and shiny

Yeah that's a good tip. If you got long hair you can't wash it everyday or it will get really dried out.

don't color it or straiten it, those kinds of things will damage it and you're hair will work to repair it with existing hair cells instead of using those cells to grow it out.

You better make a mohawk out of it once you're done, Jeff.

And dye it blue right? Hmm I was thinking more along the lines of a pony tail, or just having it hanging down, rockstar style

DREADS. Unless you have blond or red hair, because then you would just look stupid most likely.

Well thanks but I've got the style I want in my head already . And I was thinking about dreads but the "irreversible" aspect of it sort of scared me away from it. So I don't think I'll be getting those.

It's reversible. You just have to cut your hair off.

Yeeaaahh, that's my definition of "irreversible" seeing as you have to cut your hair off to ditch the dreads.

      Dreads are gross.

Crap DuB, now you've made me question everything I've assumed about hair!

That article confused me. It said you can't make your hair grow faster and then proceeded to list ways to make it grow faster.

As for dreads... I saw Jason Castro once and considered ripping out one of his as a souvenir.

You'd probably hate my hair then. It's kinda halfway between dreads and long hair. Sorta like Jimmy page when he had a beard, only more dread like. I always thought that girls would think dreads are gross, but a lot of them think my hair is awesome.
