Instinct.
At this point you'd do anything you can to survive, and you lose control, your brain takes over, your survival instincts. And flapping can also help by reaching out to grab something.

When youre falling you are weightless and the blood goes to your brain all weird. Then your brain thinks youre a bird but it doesnt help very much

I read a story about a guy who fell out of a low flying helicopter in to sand, about a 400 foot fall. He landed right and lived, but when he hit the ground and came back up, he broke his leg. and if you believe that, ø.ø

I just realized, anyone who "flaps" their hands will probably die then a guy who put his hands by their sides.

If your about to fall into water and your flapping your hands all about your bound to break your arms because of the force of the water and the speed your falling at.

There have been stories of climbers and ice-climbers falling thousands of feet and surviving with just broken legs.

If you've seen the movie "The Void" then you know, but that movie is also just another typical case. I've read about climbers falling thousands of feet into snow so thick that it cushioned everything.

To my logic though, these things sound like miracles, since even a fall of a hundred feet into water would instantly kill you as the water at that speed turns into a cement floor by the time you hit it.

Your theories are ludacris. Mine is obviosly the most logical.

I would probably panic so bad I would die before I hit the ground.

I'd be perfectly calm. If you are tense, the impact will kill you, if you are calm, th impact will go through you whole body and won't injure as much.

Wow, I hope that was sarcasm, because a 1000 foot fall will kill you no matter what you do

when did 1,000 feet come into play?

It's not a question of whether they are trying to improve their situation or not. It's about fear, watching the ground get closer and closer by the second, realizing your imminent death. That has to be terrifying, I could imagine my self screaming...I actually have lots of dreams about free falling ever since I was young. Some are quite vivid. Like flying off my swing set hundreds of feet into the air and then free falling. Anyone else used to jump off the swing set and see how far they could go?

Oh boy yes. I love doing that, still. I almost did a backflip once, but i freaked out and landed on my back after going aboout 10 in the air. My farthest was probably 6-10 feet away from the swing, lngest air was probably 3 seconds.

Really? Try it: Jump off the roof of your house with your legs bent, then try it with your legs locked straight. See which scenario breaks your legs.

People have survived extremely "unsurvivable" falls. And they obviously did so by breaking their bones. I think it was in the news, at least the internet ones, when a 2 window cleaners, who were brothers, fell off of a extremely tall building. One survived. Broken up, but he did. I also remember watching a documentary on the Hindenburg zepplin. People jumped off and ran away with minimal damage. So there are ways to survive. Especially if something brakes your fall.

Although, think about it. I personally haven't seen a "close-up" video of people falling to their deaths. How do you know that they are screaming and flapping their arms. I'm guessing if something like this happens to you, you'd most likely be in shock. And besides, you wouldn't have the time to respond since you'd be watching your life pass by in front of your eyes (bad dark humor).
