Most effective way for storing memory

I'm wondering as to what may be the most effective method for learning - or for storing and accessing memories. Mostly upon a daily basis, I would read and comprehend something, whether it to be a lecture, a news article or something else of significance. However, I can't always relate to the information - should I compel emotions towards that of which I'm learning in order to store memories more effectively - or should I try something else.
