Tell me about the scariest moment(s) in your life

What was involved, and what were your thoughts during the event?
I ask because a. it's just interesting, and b. I'm wondering if everyone's visceral reactions to intensely frightening things are all the same, or if there's some measure of variance.


I've had a few in my life. I'll try my best to keep it short, since I'm listing more than one.

1. The time my Grandmother was life-flighted.
2. The time my Dad was life-flighted.
[In both cases I felt sick, and all I could do was pray over and over that they would make it and be okay. Not much else, other than vaguely attempt to picture what life would be like without them...something I don't recommend doing, in retrospect.]

3. The time I woke up in an isolation cell in jail, with no recollection of how I got there. I look in the mirror to see a hideous bulging black eye taking up half my face: also no idea how it got there. And reading the papers left on a bench stating my offenses.
[For the first--I don't know hour or two?--I honestly felt unhuman I was so disoriented and scared. My mind went into a state of shock and disbelief, and I felt like vomiting but didn't. All I could do was probe my memory as hard as I could for what happened, to no avail which was beyond frustrating. The room creeped me out to no end, because there were no windows or clocks, flourescent lighting, and a voice that kept saying things over an intercom--everything about place reminded me of a bad dream. I remember praying, not to be saved, but to be able to remember what happened. To this day I don't know the whole story, and I can't even begin to explain how it feels...but loss of memory has got to be one of the most unsettling feelings in the world.]

4. Last night I was driving happily along the road at night, without my brights on (there was an approaching car in the oncoming lane). At the last second, and unfortunately too late: I see a slanted telephone pole with the cables hanging parallel to the road. I end up hitting the damn thing, obliterating my driver's-side window. Immediately after I feel something hot on my cheek, reach toward the scarf I'm wearing and find a very large and hot metal bolt of some sort. They had to cut the wires off my truck, and I unfortunately knocked out power to the whole street. Apologies.
[First shock, then panic/sick feeling, then sobbing pleas to God not to kill me in such a way. "I haven't even contributed anything good to the world yet", "I'm sorry, I can do better", etc. After, all I could do was say thank you over and over again, and think about was how lucky I was to have pulled the top of the pole off, or I likely would've been burned to a crisp. In retrospect, I just keep thinking about the series of coincidences leading up to and surrounding the whole thing. A weird feeling, to be sure.]


Are scary/life-threatening experiences always praying situations to you? If not, what are they?

Had appendicitis when I was . . . 13, I think. Had to have an operation for it, and despite the doctors insisting that I would be fine, I was scared shitless before I went under.

I didn't pray. The whole praying question doesn't really apply to me, seeing as I'm completely unreligious, but I just see praying as hoping for the best anyway. I did hope for the best, because hoping for the worst is retarded.

Back when I was into drugs I mixed 2 things that shouldn't be mixed. About 5 hours go by and it's been the best trip of my life. Over a period of about 60 seconds the most intense euphoria sets in. I'm just lying there with my friends having a great time then out of nowhere my heart jumps up to roughly 240 bpm and a huge burst of adrenaline. I had never had a panic attack before but it was pretty close to how my friend described his so I figured that's what it was. I calm myself down and I think the adrenaline periodically stopped the "trip" but my heart was still racing. It kept the same bpm but started to beat with greater and greater force. It hurt like you couldn't imagine and you could see my chest pumping up and down through my shirt. This went on for 15 minutes or so before I'd had enough. My friend went and woke my father and stepmom. By the time they got down the stairs I had pretty much only facial muscle control and my lungs. I went to go lay down on the bed but couldn't because my muscles wouldn't relax. I was stuck with my legs and arms curled and halfway sitting up. Despite the incredibly frightening situation I was extremely calm and completely sober. My stepmom kept telling me to calm down and flat out refused to believe I was actually calm when I told her. More time goes by and I'm only getting worse. I told her in a very stern voice to either call the paramedics or take me to the hospital. She didn't think it was necessary. I would've done it myself but I couldn't even move my fingers, much less walk to the phone. The night passes I can move again and my heart wasn't beating quite as hard and had gone down to about 200 bpm. I figured it's getting better I'll just keep riding it out. 3 days with zero sleep and it took about a week and a half for my heart rate to return to normal. By far my most frightening experience but I managed to remain retardly calm through it.

i dont know what my scariest moments would be.

well, when i was about 11 or 12, my friend accidentaly hit me in the face with a drainpipe, we were stupidly playing with drainpipes from a skip, they were jaggy at the ends, so when i got hit, just under the eye, just like a centimeter or two away from my eye, where it was hit was sliced open very deep.
i wasnt actually scared or anything at the time, because i didnt really take in how close i was to something really bad to happening. i was told about it, but i didnt take it in fully, but now when i think about it, im sort of like "omg that was close"
what could have easily happened was:
1)if i was hit a centimeter up, i would have no right eye
2)if i was treated by the hospital i was going to go to in the first place i would have lost all feeling in the right side of my face, it would be paralysed
3)it could have been the other way round and i could have hit my friend, and id have to live with it for the rest of my life. unfortunately, my friend told me he had so much scary shit going through his head while i was at hospital

but fortunalely, i have two eyes, and i can move all of my face, and i was only left with a scar, it stands out a bit, but its only a scar.

My moments are these two:

1:I was playing a game with my moms sister. It was when i was...8 i think.
In the game it was a board and markers and the markers had a text on which telled you to do something. When you throwed the dice and walked that many markers with your player, i landed on a marker which said:Jump on one fot to the nearest door and back. I handled it fine but when i came back, i leaned to much forward so i hit my forehead into the corner of my bed. It was made of wood so i got a BIG bruise on my forehead. I got a feeling that i was crying blood, but luckily, i didn't.

2:I was babysitting my little sister and i sat infront of my computer listening to music when the clock was 21:00! My sister was still watching TV and i listened to a song. When i thought the song was over, the song continued and apparently had a scary melody at the end which i didn't know about!
I was so scared that my preasure raised from 0 to 100% in 3 seconds!

When I was about 13 I had appendicitis too. I had been playing racketball at a Navy Gym with a bunch of friends that day. We were gone all day because we had to walk there and back. When I got home, my stomach hurt out of the blue. I thought I had to use the restroom and sat on the toilet for awhile.
It got worse, fast. My parents took the pain seriously and a nurse lived across the street. She said to get me to the Navy Hospital ASAP, which was about a 30 minute drive.
I was in and out of consciousness by the time I got there. They still made me wait until a kind man in a cast let me take his turn.
The doctors raced me to surgery.
I was in too much pain to be really scared. My dad was griping about me moaning and crying and my mom was yelling at my dad for yelling at me lol.
I kept passing out. The surgery was a success and all went well.

Another time, I was scaling Fort Reboubt (sp!) and I was stuck on a ledge. I couldn't go down or up and I was terrified. I eventually moved sideways enough that I could reach the top of the wall (it slanted away from the middle).

About 8 years ago or so, I was driving our RV to an auction in Maine. I took a wrong turn in Ohio and ended up off the highway. As I approached an overpass, I saw movement from about 3 people. Next thing I knew, I heard a loud crash and some of my windshield flew onto me.
At first I was too ENRAGED to be scared. I wanted to find a spot to turn around so I could run the punks over. But I was already lost and didn't want to make things worse. I pulled off at a Hotel and went into the bedroom to weake up my hubby.
There was a HUGE crack in the windshield, but hubby said we had to press onwards (after a cop stopped and took our statement. The punks were involved in some gang initiation and had caused 3 other accidents). Hubby used tape and wood and wires to reinforce the windshield, but the more I drove, the worse the crack became. I was terrified it would come flying back and blind me. But we made it to Maine safely, then back to WV.

There have been other times, but those are the ones that stand out the most.

Nothing too scary, like where my life was in danger, but there were a lot of "If that was just a few feet closer" or "If I had done that instead" moments:

1) My pool/backyard shed (can't tell which, they're so close) got hit by lightning. Unfortunately, my dad and I (the two in my house who love lightning) missed it (Dad was turned away from the window, I think I was yawning... lol) and my mom (terrified of lightning) saw it. No worries though, because a year or so later, the yard of a house across the street got hit. I think we all saw that one.
2) On my trip to Australia/New Zealand ( :panic: ) we had to stop in Fiji to refuel. But when we got to Fiji, we heard over the intercom that the plane had a hydraulic leak. This turned out well, however, because I got to spend about 6 hours chillin' in Fiji. :banana: (I drank Fiji water. In Fiji. Life goal, check.)
3) IDK if y'all heard about the Monorail crash in Disney World last summer (July) but I honestly believe if my family hadn't got tickets to see fireworks in Magic Kingdom under this reserved pavilion (there were like a couple hundred spaces, the rest had to see them from the rest of the park) we would've probably been on that monorail. If we didn't get those tix, we were planning on going to the park the monorail was heading from/to (I think it was EPCOT) and being the Disney freaks we are, we would've requested to sit up front with the driver (which is pretty cool) And thus, crash, dead.

Oh and when my mom found out she had a tumor that was definitely reaally scary at first. But once we found out it was benign it wasn't too bad. (She's fine now)

Oh and this isn't really life threatening, cause I had it under control basically, but a few months after we adopted my dog, she started acting pretty crazy, and leaped at me from the floor halfway across the room, all the way to the spot on the couch I was sitting on. I didn't really know if she was playing or actually trying to attack me but it was pretty scary. I was able to hold her down and get my hand over her mouth so she couldn't bite me or anything tho. Really I was more scared for her, since I didn't wanna lose her. (She's much calmer now. I love her. :D)

I feel like theres more than that though...
