      "[N-Word] Fucker"

Got your attention, yet? Haha. Good.

Anyway, so check this out. There's a tavern right next to my job, where my friends and I usually go in and have lunch and a couple of beers. It's more or less a little honky-tonk bar, but there are all kinds of people that come in and out. Well, today, it's just my friend and I having lunch, and there are maybe 6 other people in the bar - all white; 2 of which are an older couple who are sitting at the bar right next to our table. My friend is a very attractive, light-skinned, Spanish girl, and we're sitting there sharing a basket of wings and playing darts at the board which is also right next to our table, but on the opposite side of us from the couple.

Well, at one point, I was looking up at one of the tv's and noticed out of the corner of my eye that it seemed like the guy in the couple was looking in our direction. I really paid him no mind, and I wasn't really all that sure he was looking at us at the time, but I figured that, if he was, he might have just been stealing a look at my friend. We're regulars there, and everyone is always real nice and whatnot, though I'd never seen this particular couple before.

So, as we're playing darts - unbeknownst to me - the guy gets up and goes over to the jukebox. (I didn't see him do it, but my friend saw him and told me later). A country song comes on, which is nothing new, and I wasn't even really listening because I was teaching my friend how to play Cricket. So, about halfway through the song, I actually started noticing the lyrics.

This is the song that was playing:

It's called "Nigger Fucker", by David Allan Coe.

I just laughed and we continued playing our game. I hadn't seen who turned the song on, and I wasn't about to start any shit because of some ignorant shit who wanted to get under our skin. It was funny to me, and my friend just kind of rolled her eyes. When we had to go back to work, and walked outside, she told me that it was fucked up that someone would play that - for us, obviously. She was a lot more pissed than I thought she was. I told her that it was pretty fucked up, and asked her if she saw who played it. She said it was the guy in the couple, and that while we were playing, she noticed them both staring at us and laughing to themselves. She had thought about saying something, herself, but decided not to (and I'm glad she didn't, because she is a kickboxer with one Hell of a temper). I told her that it's best that we didn't (the last thing I need is the cops showing up to the bar outside my job, because we kicked some old couple's asses) and that I just don't even have time to let myself get caught up in that kind of bullshit. If I got that riled up everytime someone did something like that toward me, I'd either be dead or in jail by now.

I did check the song out, when I came home, and I know that it was written "as satire", according to the artist, who had a black drummer in his band at the time - and has since been a very vocal proponent of anti-racism and in open opposition to groups like the KKK - but the manner in which it was played "for us" was anything but satire.

All I can say is that that guy's lucky I'm not so easily baited, and that my friend decided to leave it alone as well. Part of me almost wishes he would have said whatever he had to say, to us, instead of having the song speak for him. It's best for everyone that they didn't though, and that we were both able to chalk it up to their ignorance.

      Ugh. Some people.

The title definitely got my attention.

Anyway, that's really lame, it's also upsetting that someone would do something that obscenely dickish. Do you know if anyone else in the bar noticed?

Yeah. I'm friends with the bartender who was working at the time and she noticed. We came back in on our third break but the couple was gone. The bartender told me that she'd never seen that couple before either, but she couldn't believe the guy played that song. She had been standing at the end of the bar talking to one of the other customers about it when the guy played it.

Well, according to my friend, she was looking and snickering too. My friend had been digging in her purse on the table, at the time, so she was facing their direction when I had my back turned, facing the dartboard. If anything, I thought it was just the guy that had a problem, but apparently the woman was enjoying herself.

Wowww such ignorance even in this day and age. I'd like to think that these types of racist people are slowly dying off and being replaced with a smarter generation.
Your restraint is admirable. Then again a man who can't enjoy beer, wings and games with pretty girl, regardless of the circumstances, wouldn't be a man at all =p.
Maybe, just for a second, you'll be awestruck.
      ...do you feel it to?

I really pity that anyone has to deal with discrimination like this, it's something you can't really fight.
I would've tried to hurt them in any way that I could have, just hearing about it makes me so angry.

What jerks, the annoyance is that it's not right, and that it cannot be put right. Even beating the shit out of them wouldn't put it right; there's just nothing that can except themselves, and what makes it so sad is that they more than likely won't ever.

These mindsets are a spit in the face of dignity. ]:

I agree. People that blatant aren't easily changed. They have to be willing to first put their ignorance aside, and at least welcome the chance for another perspective. The guy probably wanted for me to get upset, and to get all puffed up and defensive about it, thus giving him an excuse to feel his hatred is justified. If you're the type that would tryin to ruin the good time of two people minding their own business, it's pretty apparent that you're too stuck up your own ass to accommodate a change in perspective.

Which brings me to another, more positive story, which I think I've told on DV before (but it's related, and awesome, so I'll tell it here, too. Heh.):

I had been with my best friend, about two years ago. He'd just had a falling out with his ex, and was feeling a bit nostalgic. She was big into country music but, before meeting her, he wasn't. So we were out one night, and he wanted to go into this country bar where they used to hang out, and I went with him. I was the only black guy there, which didn't bother me at all, and we were just sitting and playing darts and drinking beer. There was a couple of people playing darts at the board next to us, and we started talking to them and I was dancing with one of the women in the group. We were all having a great time.

Well, there was large, older guy who was sitting at the end of the bar a few feet away from us. You could tell he was a "good ol' boy," cause he was wearing a trucker's hat, suspenders, and sporting a huge ZZ Top beard. I went over to the bar to get another round of drinks, and wound up standing next to him. He looked at me, drunk as all Hell, and I could tell he wanted to say something. Finally, he said something like "You know...I'm a really prejudice man. I grew up in a very prejudice family. I saw you come in here, and immediately I had bad feelings about you. I was thinking to myself 'oh, this guy's going to cause some trouble.' All my life, that's just how I've thought about black people. But, while you were over there, I was watching you, and I saw you laughing and joking and just having a good time. You acted just like the rest of us, like you were comfortable and weren't here to start any trouble, and I honestly don't know what to say about that..."

By this time, I noticed that my friend was standing behind me. He'd heard the guy's tone, which was very serious, and thought that he was starting shit with me. He was about ready to jump the guy from behind, if any shit started. Haha.

Well, I was very cordial with the guy, and he started talking about his misconceptions, and how he thought black people were all like the ones you see in the media, and they were good for nothing but trying to start shit with people, and disrespecting women and all of that. He said "you know what I think is wrong with all of those 'bad guys' I see out there? They have no respect for their mothers. Do you love your mother?" I said that my mother is one of the most amazing people on the planet, and that I love her more than anyone else, except maybe my daughter. I could see what I could only describe as relief in his eyes. I told him that he can't base everything off of assumptions. That there were good and bad people of all colors, and you can't judge someone until you've actually met them, or taken them for their actions. Seriously, the guy looked like he wanted to cry. He offered his hand and I shook it, we exchanged names and he bought me a drink. He told me that it was a pleasure to meet me, in a way that made it seem like just meeting me was a revelation. We sat there and talked about stereotypes and prejudice for a good ten minutes or so.

One of the most satisfying conversations I've ever had in my life.

It's good you showed restraint though...that asshole trying to start a fight totally failed.

      I don't get it.
Your friend is playing darts with an Irish man, and they play "Nigger Fucker"?
      Why would they play that?
      *scratches his head*

      Alright, so in all seriousness..
Though this may have bothered you and your friend for an evening, the couple in question is going to have to bear the burden of getting all bent out of shape over everything that they can think of. We all know the type. Queers, blacks, rock and roll, and anyone who wears a certain hat are going to piss this couple off for the rest of their lives. They have to deal with that. It is just as well. They have picked their own small piece of hell on earth.

Besides, they also have to live every day knowing that they are stupid.

That story is very moving O, it's uplifting to hear of experiences like that.

It's good to know there's people that are open enough to see change to old ideas, even if there are those that need a bit more time and encouragement.

Haha. Yeah. There's nothing that pisses someone off more than not being able to piss someone else off.

Yeah. Their own small piece of Hell on Earth is right. I mean how pitiful and debilitating is your existence, when you just shut out and oppose everyone/thing that is different from you?

But, that's the problem with stupid people, though. They don't know that they're stupid. Sort of a catch-22. It would be great if there was like a device that let people see themselves through the eyes of others. God...there are so many people that I'd like to use it on.

I briefly looked at the title while hitting back. When it kicked in what the title said I instantly hit back. When I saw the title...my jaw dropped. When I saw who posted the title, I was relieved.

I don't know that it was actually in the jukebox's database. They have a "megasearch" option where, if a song is not directly saved onto the jukebox, you can pay another 50 cents and download it from a larger, internet database.

I don't know that that was the case, though. If I remember to, when I go in on Monday, I'll check and see if it was actually on the box.

Yeah, I'd be curious. I guess when I hear "jukebox" I think of those old school machines that grab the record and put it on the thing and play it. I didn't even think of the "megasearch" thing.

It's sad that the couple would do something like that (regardless of whether it was directed to you or not, althought that would make it even MORE sad)....it makes me lose faith in humanity to a point.

how okay it is to use this word as long as you're black.
If it's offensive for one, it's offensive for all.
IMO this thread would normally locked no?

Onei, a moderator, posting a title with "Nigger Fucker".

Only Onei would be able to get away with this.

Someone edited my title "If You Think It's Time to Fucking Rock, and Fucking Roll, out of Control",
      Yet "Nigger Fucker" seems fine.
You do this every fucking time.
      No sweat.

There is no doubt that our society is cloaked with double standards and they will always exist.
The word is not always used maliciously.

Does it have a place in DV everyday?

      no.

      Lock thread.

That's a lyric from the song I was discussing in the thread.

I'm just saying, if I say "fuck" how many people does that offend?
if I say "Nigger" how many people will that offend.

Here in the DV community we all know that Onei is a man of color and him saying "nigger" wouldn't be offense. But a newcomer or a lurker see's "Nigger Fucker" as a thread title, wouldn't he be a bit offended by that?

I'm just saying, if you're going to edit my titles because the word "fuck" is in it twice, wouldn't it make sense to edit a title with the word "nigger" and "fuck" in the title?

Especially coming from a moderator? I'm fine with having swearing in the title, but if we're going to edit something as little as "fuck" in a title, might as well do the rest. And might I add, "nigger" is more offensive than fuck any day.

So I'm not calling out Onei or anything, I'm just saying, let's try to be fair eh?

IMO this thread would normally locked no?

sorry maybe I am just acting like a pseudo mod. I am new here.

      poor taste.
I don't like anyone using the word ("saying" and "using" are two different concepts). I posted it because it was the name of the song, and it was what my friend was, inadvertently, being called. I find it offensive when it's used toward me, or toward people of my race in general, which is clearly not what I was doing in the title. The difference? Context. Note that the thread is about my disapproval of the word(s) and song being used as they were. Different from someone who used the word in a title because it was lulzy, or as an insult.

If someone else was posting about this song, put the title of the song as the thread title (as is), and their post was like "Wow. What shitty, racist song," etc. then I would have no problem with the word being in the title.

If someone posted the word in the title because they thought it was funny, or they were specifically talking about someone, then there would be a problem.

I don't care if the person saying the word is black, white, yellow or purple. What I care about is the way it's being used. Most people who just want to "say it just to be able to say it" are completely oblivious to this, and think that they can just use it however they want, because "Hey, if black people can do it, we can do it too."

If you really want to get into the logistics of the word, and why some feel it's right that they can say it, and others feel it's wrong that they "can't" say it, we can do that.

      I think I remember that.
Personally, I took a cue from many of the other threads I've seen popping up with "Fuck" in the title (of which there have been plenty). I, for one, don't have a problem with it. Again, as far as the word "nigger," I used it in the title because it is the name of the song, and it was theme of the song in which the thread/story is based upon. I actually thought about it, before using the word, whereas a majority of the other times it might have been posted by someone, it wouldn't have been for such a neutral reason.

If anyone has that serious a problem with it (which, considering I was the one that posted it, I'd be surprised about), I have no problem with censoring it.

No offense, but this is exactly what I'm talking about. Without being in the culture that had "taken back" the term "nigga" (not "nigger") saying it just to say it is what causes problems. It is wanting to be included, while being ignorant to what is actually behind the colloquialism of the culture that uses the slang (as opposed to the derogatory word, in it's original state).

It is the difference between walking up to a group of your friends and saying "whats up, bitches?!" and everyone laughing about it, and a complete stranger coming up to your group of friends and saying "what's up, bitches?" and a fight breaking out.

      [Edit]
And since I can see that this is going to be a problem, and I don't want it detracting too much from the original point of the thread: Title changed.[/Edit]

      Awe, you changed the title?
This is a primary example of the pussification of America. It is a shame that anyone cannot say what they have to say without worrying about offending somneone.
Well, I am offended that GH had to edit his post.

Better plead the fifth, because you can't plead the first.
