Tell me, is it safe to travel to Cancun?

I don't believe in all this pandemic bullshit regarding Swine Flu, however it is evident that there's a case of it going around with a few deaths too.

With this in mind I decided I'd quite like to visit Cancun in a couple of weeks - but if I go, really, is there any more chance of me catching it in Mexico than here in the UK?

I'd say there's a significantly higher risk of catching it in Mexico than in the UK, but I don't know for sure.
I wouldn't be too worried, though.

      You little fucking jet-setter, you.

      [/jealousy]

I don't think the risk is as high as many people think it is (or it's been portrayed), but I'm no expert. Personally, I'd take the risk just to be able to go down and see Cancun and all the little native chicks.

I'd be more worried about Montezuma's Revenge then the Swine flu at this point.

      ^What he said.

Really, the whole thing was being blown out of proportion by the media (hey...it is what they do best, after all). Nobody took into account the fact that Mexico's medical facilities are, fankly, ass...so the deathtoll in Mexico appears more alarming than it really is. I don't know what the statistics are in regards to how many people die in Mexico of the regular flu, but I'm sure the number is similar (if not higher) than the number of people dying from the swine flu.

Also, I've heard of only one documented case thus far of anyone in the U.S. dying of the flu. You'd think people could do some simple math:

U.S. + good medical facilities = fewer deaths

Mexico + shitty medical facilities = more deaths

So I say go for it, bud.

I've been to Cancun before and let me tell ya, it really isn't that great. We flew from Austin Texas (our place of residence) all the way down to the coastal city. When we got there, we actually had to bribe the Mexican customs officials to let us into the country because apparently there was something wrong with my stepfather's birth certificate. There are literally hundreds of shops, but their stock repeats over and over so you end up going to virtually the same shop half a dozen (or many, many more) times. The hotel was great, but you run out of things to do there.

If you do go, make sure you know what you're dealing with: lots and lots of corruption. Bring lots of cash and you shouldn't have any problems. As one of my Mexican-American buddies told me a long time ago "You can get anything in Mexico. You might have to look around awhile, but you could probably find a jet engine." But then, you may not have any problems with corrupt people at all.

In my opinion Cancun is overrated, but if you really want to go I think it's safe enough.

A friend of mine returned not to long ago and said nothing of the sort

Anyway - I've a few places I'm looking around at the moment, I think Cancun is still top of the list though

Only keep 20 bucks in your wallet, and the rest hidden. They'll pull you over for no reason and you can bribe your way out... or that was Roserita.

I'd be more worried about all the fucking plane crashes that have been happening recently and Belgian pilots dying in midflight.

      That shit's scary.

The drug cartels and the corrupt cops are much more dangerous than the Swine Flu. My cousin got robbed by a cop in Mexico. I am totally serious.
