I feel like an asshole...

So many of you know that my parents got divorced recently (if you didn't, then surprise...)

Well, my dad just walked into my room and told me that my mom chewed him out over yahoo messenger because we didn't have any food. A couple of days ago I went with my aunt to the store to get some food, and then my aunt and grandma tells my mom that we had no food, so my mom chews my dad out for it. I just felt really bad for that because he said he was trying to do the best he can, and I know he is. He has to get food for me, my bro, my cousin, and himself. Well, my cousin can take care of himself somewhat, but he's not the brightest person in the world...

I just came home and got some food and sat down on my computer. Before I was done eating, he came in and told me all this. My stomach just got very upset...and after he was done talking to me I couldn't eat the rest of it...my stomach felt really sick and upset :(

Then he tells me that he owes the IRS $1000...both my sister and my mom knew this and didn't tell him.

I know that's not my fault, but that just gets me upset too that my dad has to take care of all of us, and that all this crap is going on...

well don't feel like an asshole by sustaining your body with nutritional supplements. you're just kind of stuck in the cross-fire (fuck the IRS btw). maybe getting a job (if you don't already have one) will make you feel better by contributing to your dad's cause.

I wish I could get a job but I have summer school right now...then once I get out of summer school, my mom wants me to come visit her in July...

Have you thoguht about odd jobs? They won't consume as time as even apart time job, and even though their crappy hard labor jobs, there is always someone willing to let you pull weeds or mow lawns for them. Of course this also is a time permitting job. I'm sorry, I wish I could help you, and don't feel so bad, Cygnus is right it's not your fault you need to eat. If your mom is making things difficult (Or your aunt and grandmother) could have a talk with them asking them to ease up a bit?

I agree with Hazel, there must be some odd job you can do to help him out. It's a lot more proactive than just feeling bad....

How old are you, may I ask? And how recent was the divorce?

I have some good advice on the firespawn that consumes so many families... my own experiences are pretty rough, and even though the children (should) be told that it's not their fault, sometimes it's nigh impossible to avoid that feeling.

I'm 16, the divorce happened about a month ago.

For starters, none of it is any of your fault period.
Secondly, being a parent is DAMN hard- especially if you don't have a support system... but your dad should NOT be confiding in you. "The kids" don't have to know everything mom and dad have to deal with. You guys have enough age appropriate stuff to worry about without having to worry the adults too.

But it's very nice and mature that you're wanting to help out. I'm sure he notices all your efforts and appreciates them (even just picking up after yourself could be a god-send).
