Clarinet. Actually very versatile if you learn it well enough :D Granted I'm kind of biased, but oh well.
-Amé
That's ok :P I need one that is nice and creative, i'll pick out the majority or something when i'vebeen given enough options....
Acoustic guitar.
But we're all biased.
Dylan
I think I would agree with Dylan about acoustic guitar... maybe classical though.... or 12 string. Besides guitars of any sort.... I think the next best would be piano, scales and such are similar to guitar, making it easy to learn if you know the other ...... and both instruments you can really make sing.......
Really though there are infinite possibilities of combinations of chords and notes..... the instrument really doesn't matter... the creativity comes from you
I think the piano is probably the most versatile instrument. It has a huge range of notes, and it's easy to play different combinations. The acoustic guitar would probably be next. It's not quite as versatile, but still a lot of fun, and its portable. Of course, the problem with those is that almost everybody can play one or the other. If you wanna play somethig that nobody else does, and still has a wide range of possibilities, check out the accordian. :-P
Celtic & Bluegrass Fiddle
Didgeridu
Bagpipes
Harmonicas
Mandolin
Upright Bass
[edit: learning to play instrument, is like learning a martial art. -if you plan to be any good, then you need a lot of dedication, and passion.]
piano hands down is the most versatile instrument. want to play classical, or jazz? both styles use pianos. if you can play a piano, then you can play an organ, or synth. -again, access to other styles of music. when you play the piano, you can play melodies, backing tracks, or bass lines. -this can lead to interest in other instruments.
i would suggest picking up the instrument that interests you the moist. then build up from there.
one thing, dicipline is the key. stick w/it. it will be boring in the begining... trying to get proper tone, posture/how to hold an instrument, technique, finger excercises. but it will be worth it in the end.
don't be one of those retarded posers that only know how to read tab. learn how to read real sheet music. it's not hard.
buy a metronome too.
i started off w/the baritone, picked up a couple of instruments here and there, now i play the turntables. i suck at playing the piano, but i can program/sequence the hell out of a synth. -you'd think i was jerry lee lewis ;p hehehehe...
