Thread: How smart do you think you are?

well, it depends on who im being compared too. compared to a 2 year old, im a genius, but to a 22 year old top honors college student planning on entering the medical field, im stupid. so really, it depends on who you are surrounded by. if you have dumb friends, youll think youre smart even though you may actually be dumb. and if you have super intelligent friends, you may feel dumb, even though to many other people you may be highly intelligent. anyways, i know this doesnt measure your intelligence, but i tested my IQ on tickle.com and got 120 and then on iqtest.com and got 139, so those arent too accurate lol...

um i said above average.

because... I do well in school. But, sometimes i just lack common sense.

why isn't the question at the end of the first sentence correct? ... and the don't I don't really get either... that is also ok..he doesn't have to type do not .. hhmmm I guess the comma could be left out but maybe he wanted to pause there... and uuhh a lot is two words, like he typed.....

Regardless I don't think your level of intelligence is equal to your grammar or spelling abilities.. or how much you know... but rather your ability to learn.

All the red letters, are what he added to the quote to fix it. Your right though. On a forum, people get really lazy. If your writing a paper or something and make that many mistakes though, thats a different story.

i voted average as it realy depends on what subject its judged by ... if we are talking partical physics then im probably the dumbest person in the world but on the other hand if we are talking about something that i have spent alot of time understanding and working on then im very smart!

so as people excell in diffrent subjects and fail in overs its imposibal to say that your smarter than anyone or dumber unless you specify a subject after all someone may have a high iq and know the square rout of 758 but not know how to drive a car!

I always thought I was average but then I started working at walmart and I started seeing a ton of different people. Now I don't want to say most people who are working or shopping there are stupid, but most are below what I used to consider "average".

First of all I said how smart do you think that YOU are. I do not care if you think that I am smart or not. I know that I am smart, I do not really care what you think because I love my self, someone who puts down others must only care about themself. A tidbit from Psych 101: In the US, a highly individualistic culture, approximately 70% of the population thinks they are above average in a given trait/ability (an obvious statistical impossibility). In Japan, a very communally-oriented culture, 50% of the population thinks they are above average. So if you ask people from individualistic cultures (which dominate most of North America and Europe) whether they think they are of above average intelligence, expect about 20% to be wrong.

Intelligence is always uncertain, like you've all been saying. Basically, it's subjective since, say in the Middle Ages, you were a priest. To the pesantry and even nobles, you were a highly intelligent person. But today, an intelligent "token" would be, a physicist or a neural surgeon.

(P.S., to be honest, and this is a little bit off topic, I'm starting to notice that the system of education in America is becoming more nationalist as the years go by. Instead of focusing on actual education, we focus on letting the students score high. Sure we look good on an international basis, but where less than 2 percent of the population are getting the very best in education, the rest of the country does not. But this a very tricky topic in itself.)

Knowing stuff doesn't prove you are smart. It just means you are knowledgable. An IQ test is the closest thing that measures your actual intellegence.

However, even IQ tests are not completely non-biased and totally measures intellegence. So there's no real way to know how smart someone is. You can only get an estimate.

I say I'm above average, although I might be smarter, it all depends in what, subjects that I am learning in school, my way of thinking, how I am socially, etc. All these factors, but overall I think I'm just above average. Women evaluate men on several aspects, one of them is intellignece, but in this case they keep on picking these arrogant asshole jocks and not the guy who invented the atom bomb, so there are different kinds of intelligence.

Well no one is going to say they think their below average.

Good point. I mean if you get an high mark in an IQ test that you know you just guessed on, you are likely to not debate it. (e.g: all those twelve year olds i meet that say "I HAVE AN IQ OF 140!!!" when in fact they just selected a bunch of random bullet points from the test, and because of their low age, the points got multipled. Alot. A smart person is somebody who, say, dosen't take an IQ test at it's face value.

Anyway, I suppose if I had to guess my intelligence, I suppose looking at me now - I am fourteen years old and capable of pulling off a stunt of saying I'm, say...19? But this is only text, and never portrays what one is really like. For example I never use the word "portray" in real life. Or make stupid sarcastic comments like these ones.

I'd say I was above average. By how much, I really don't know. I haven't got any Alberts Einsteins around to compare myself with.

I think it actually doesn't matter how smart you are, as long as you know your spelling and grammar well and you have a great vocabulary. because if you have all that then people THINK youre smart. ;D

I think that all you need to be considered smart is to have a good memory. I have noticed that many peaple that can recall trivial knowlege have the label of being smart. But they could quote you the text manual on how to change your tire & not be able to do it. So there is common sense smart and there is intuitive smart.
IQ tests are in question because they do not cover a broad range of areas.
Does anyone belong to mensa?
There are problems on their tests I could spend all day and never get the answer, while in other areas it comes very naturally.

If you think about it, a lot of the IQ tests base it on how your brain works. For example, two people buy a puzzle of 10,000 pieces.

The first guy uses "average" brain processing and problem solving skills and he completes the puzzle in a few months, using the box-image to help him a lot.

The second person processes the image on an absurdly complex problem solving pattern that's he just born with. He doesn't see 10,000 pieces with different shapes and pictures, he sees the completed image and can seperate the image to his liking. He completes the puzzle in about a week's time.

Now, not surprisingly, this carries into mathematics as well. We attribute numbers to values by memorization and association, whereas the genius, in his mind (perhaps without even realizing it) chooses such a simple path that he is able to organize and compute information at unhuman levels. You see '2', he sees a thousand different combination, patterns, and equations for two.

Also why these IQ are supposed to be timed, and you're asked to take your time to a reasonable pace.
