I'd rather stick with Opera and it's built-in features.

You're probably right, but I think it's good enough to have a thread.

I downloaded it, and took out some ads on my favorite sites. I had this before, but had forgotten to add it when my computer got restored. Thanks.

The wiki of one of my favorite browser games, (Kingdom of Loathing,) didn't check their ads closely enough for malware one time. Users were attacked by a popup ad that implanted a virus into their system when interacted with. Half of those on the forum had Adblock Plus installed, so nobody with it got the malicious ad.

Using the internet is like having sex with a hobo. You never know what it could give you, so it's best to stay safe.

No, the internet is fine
it's the system installed on your machine that's wrong

Then....how do the ads that sites put on pay off if so many people have this installed? Or is it a small amount of the population that has things like this installed, so it doesn't matter?

Same reason why spam is profitable

There's no financial outlay to the site operator
It costs £0 to display an ad

There's no cost of printing, or anything like what's involved with printed adverts. The bandwidth costs to display an ad born by the ad operator (google, or whoever)

Consequently, it costs £0 to display 50 ads or 100 ads
Even if only one in a thousand visitors clicks on an ad, it's all profit

With no overheads, the worst you can do is not make any money
