Thread: Societies and Life outside of Earth

I believe there is great possibility of there being some sort of life outside this planet.

Considering the vast and infinite size of the universe, I also believe in advanced societies in distant galaxies. If that's the case however, I would expect their technology to be very different than ours considering their habitat (including raw materials and energy source) would differ from this planet's.

Anyways, I think thats there is definitely intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. There are billions of galaxies containing billions of stars, about 5-10% of those stars have solar systems around them. If only 1% of those systems have terrestrial planets, and only 1% of those are livable, and 1% of those have life, and 1% of those have complex life, and 1% of those have intelligent life...that's still a helluva lot of intelligent life.

I think there's intelligent life in our own galaxy, not just our universe. Considering there's about 100,000,000,000 stars in the main disk alone, not including the globular clusters which have like 200,000 more each. Granted not all of them are proven to have planets, but then again, our technology isn't that good at detecting them.

There's good evidence that life "as we know it" would not be able to survive within a certian (very sizable) radius of the centre. The radiation is just too intense for organic compounds to stabilize.

While it does serve to be quite compact and could be carried around on a post-it-note, it won't hold up to such much as this:

The only thing worse than an argument with a closed-minded person is a person with such a closed mind that they won't even discuss things.

If you are going to say things like "Aliens do not exist" and claim to have knowledge of "God-inspired truths" then I am going to take issue with those statements. Statements like that are the height of intellectual irresponsibility.

No, statements like that are just fine. It's making statements like that and then not defending them that's intellectually irresponsible.

Did I say "Aliens don't exist"? No. I said, I don't believe that there is life outside of earth. It's what we call on open-ended response. I made it perfectly clear in the philosophy forum that you already have an opinion and no matter what I say, it won't matter because you've already made up your mind on the issue. And how can you judge that I'm closed-minded from the, say, 5 or 6 posts that I've made concerning my personal opinions? Since this is in the Lounge, I figured that what was required was simply my opinion. Not to mention, I knew that if I said why I believe what I do that this would turn into a philosophical debate, which is not something I want right now.

I appreciate your enthusiasm for debate, but I, however, do not share it.

Well. There's alot of space out there. Probability would suggest there is.

Copernicus said it once and I will say it again: The earth is not the center of the universe. Not just locationwise, but in importance or eventfulness. I do believe that in such a great universe (greater than we can even imagine), there has to be another planet around that presents similar conditions to that of earth and can harbor being such as ourselves and all the beings that reside on earth. Maybe they got a head start and are much more advanced than us, just as I am sure there are probably some others that are way behind.

No matter what, I don't think that we are alone in this existance and we are the center and purpose of all existence, time and space...

Very true. Some of those who do not believe in life outside of earth simply use personal opinion in thinking that life is too much of a "miracle" to happen more than once, even in such a huge universe, even in such a huge span of time.

As you said, all there needs for a planet to evolve life is conditions similar to this planet, that is, water along with livable atmosphere and temperatures. Other conditions also may be able to evolve life systems different of ours, capable of sustaining in such environments, however that would be leaning towards fiction so I will stick to our known environment.

There are galaxies throughout millions of light-years from this planet, which is to say there are incredibly many planets in many times a 9,460,000,000,000,000km radius. Be aware that that figure is already ridiculously conservative. To assume that every single planet in the universe has conditions unlike the one we live in would be extremelly egocentric. Also considering the incrediblly long life time of these galaxies, it would be even more egocentric to assume that similar environments were uncapable of developing life systems.

exactly...it's not only a matter of size, but also a matter of time. The universe is just too big, and has been around for too long for there not to be other possible civilizations somewhere out there...
