      Pandora...what's so special about it?

So I saw Avatar and I loved it like most people. However I'm wondering what is everyone's obsession with Pandora? It was really beautiful and all, but I dunno...it didn't seem like super amazing or uber special to me? At least, not anything more amazing than I've seen in some of my lucid dreams or any recent Final Fantasy or Myst game. Am I missing something?

Pandora is a giant, genetically engineered organic construct developed by the technologically-advanced precursors to the Na'vi civilization, with adaptor cables and interactive features everywhere, as well as a planet-sized artificial intelligence running it all.

I mean is alright. The colour scheme seemed to have been picked by a twleve year old though.

It looks awesome to explore! You get to see and experience the animals and plants there as well as do anything you want. I would definitely love to go to Pandora sometime.

I know what you might think, "Well why can't I just explore any other planet?" well you can. But visiting Pandora, you would have a structured idea of what it is like there already from what you saw in the movie.

Hmm I definitely need to see the movie again. I guess the worlds from Myst/Riven/Exile seem just as unique and immersive and possibly even more so. You get familiar with the wildlife and everything. VERY familiar...when it takes forever to solve those puzzles. Maybe I shouldn't have seen the movie when I was tripping though. I probably forgot some things and was too caught up in the pretty colors.

Am I joking? Who can say. Drugs are bad mkay.

What I said was mostly conjecture.

The film was just pretty hippies and funny horses.

Look for low grade smut with soft nudity on the front.

      Chances are I wrote it.

I was not overly impressed by Pandora either. Some people say "It's the world we'd all want to live in" when it's eons away from being a place I'd even consider taking up residence.

I wouldn't want to live there either. It would suck having to wear an oxygen mask for the rest of your life.

      Read it carefully.

Every novel of low grade smut I churn out for the publishers has a subtext. A message hidden beneath the more obvious, cliched, lurid storyline. See:

The Duchess and her Handyman is really a treatise on Randian Objectivism, re-evaluating the philosophy with relevance to modern day social engineering.
Lord of Her Ring was a gentle parody of the theory work of Jaques Derrida, especially in terms of literary criticism. The relationship between the wizard who finds love with the hobbit cook is a metaphor for the relationship between a critic and his subject. It's subtle, but I really felt I dealt with some pretty deep themes.

The list goes on. You just have to read my work more closely, that's all.

Its a visual orgasm. Thats it. Its special because the special effects are superb. There are many MANY MANY other places I'm going to go first. I'm going to go to Banshee from Armor, I'm going to go to Middle Earth. I'm going to go to TAMRIEL before I go to pandora. I'm surpised that people aren't going "LOLOL I want to go to where Crysis takes place because it luks gud."
And now.. for a Stephen Strutmeyer Film...

I would like to sit motionless in space and watch the Earth consumed by a dying sun.

I would also like cold pasta.

Yeah I know what you mean. Pandora was gorgeous but they didn't really show much of it. And plus the movie was in 3D so the environment was usually out of focus so you can't really pay much attention to the environment. Can't beat the first time I finished Final Fantasy X though, I literally wished I could disappear from this world and live on Spira.

Are you sure that was a downside on the 3D?

I thought they used the 3D aspect quite well on making the environment immersive and impressive and the like.

I think the place looked cool at night with all the lights and such, and yeah it'd be fun to chillax there in a lucid or two, but I don't see any reason to obsess over it like some people have been doing...it was a good movie, but not obsessing-good. Seeing it again is fine, seeing a third time is a bit much, and if you see it more than 5 times, you have some serious issues.

Same with the Earth, except for the adaptor cables.
I think that there are places right here on Earth that are more Beautiful than Pandora. Like the Kalalau Valley in Hawaii. Like the Himalayas. Like many natural tropical places. Like those mountain/canyon formations in Utah. Like the Andes. Like the phosphorescent seas in Hawaii and the phosphorescent mushrooms in the Appalachian mountains. Like the Sahara desert. I think that people who are all into Pandora really need to do some traveling and see this world we have right here. And they need to remember that the Na'vi were basically Native Americans or any aboriginal people who lived in touch with Nature, except that they were huge and blue and they rode dragons.

If I had my pick of any fantasy world Pandora likely wouldn't be my first choice. There are so many to pick from, doesn't anybody read anymore? I think people have just fixated on Pandora because James Cameron did such a good job of bringing his world to life visually.

I think I'd prefer a D&D style world. But not in a physical sense, at least not unless I was as powerful a magic user as Elminster.

It is a nice place to live, if you don't mind half your friends being eaten alive the native wildlife. They went out of their way to explain how dangerous it was. Though they didn't really have time to show how many of the native people were ripped to pieces on a daily baises, or who fall from extreme heights. Sure they live in harmony with nature, but accidents happen and I am sure a great number of them getting aten alive each year.

It is like saying you want to live in the rainforest. The rainforest is very beautiful, but you have jaguars that try to eat you, and bad dieases, and poor medical services, and giant bugs. No one actually wants to live in the middle of a rain forest. Just like how no one would actually want to live on pandora.

A nice place to visit, but a horrible place to live.

      My view:

      Avatar = severely overrated

Lord of the Rings = severely underrated

      The end.
