      Roadable aircraft in 2011

It will carry two people plus luggage and will operate on a single tank of regular unleaded gas.[9]

The Transition's maiden flight on 5 March 2009 lasted 37 seconds and covered 3,000 feet (910 m) of the runway at the Plattsburgh International Airport.[10] The test pilot then conducted 6 additional takeoffs and landings.[8]

      How exciting!

Its not really a flying car as the video attempts to paint it, but simply a more compact plane that you can park in your driveway.

You'll still need an airport to even utilize its flight capabilities. I mean maybe its a step forward, but I fail to see the practicality of it.

I'd be way too paranoid to drive that on the road. Aviation parts are so expensive, a little fender bender or pothole would rack you up in the thousands for repairs.

In the future.. drivers licenses will be replaced with pilot licenses and little 16 year old kids will be begging their parents for their first carplane.

You can park it in your garage and take off on the highway.

And no, it's not a compact plane, because a compact plane cannot drive on the road.

      Did you watch the video?

As cool as it sounds. I have to agree with ExoByte. Looks like a compact plane to me. Cars don't look like that. And hopefully will never look like that.

I doubt it can take off on the highway. If the wings stretch out, it'll take up way more than 1 lane.

If you watched the video, it DID take off on the highway.

Also, things change. Cars may very well look like that in the future.

And, it may be considered rather stylish.

I mean, I think it looks cool. "Horseless carriages" were REALLY weird and REALLY clunky until people got the hang of it, and grew used to them.

While I don't recall seeing a highway-takeoff, I still think it's a flying vehicle no-less. Yes, it's a step forward, and yes it can't be used in certain situations, but I think it still qualifies as a car you can fly.

I mean, you can drive it. And if you wanted to and had enough space to takeoff and land it, you could fly it. What more do you need to define it as a flying car?

There was a car passing on that "runway".

If that was a runway, it was certainly the strangest runway I've ever seen.

It was a runway. Look at the numbers on the side. The car was probably just monitoring the flight.

I can't wait for the British 'texting while flying' PSA.

Also, definitely a runway. The truck driving along side it was probably tagging along in case the Terrafugia crashed and the pilots needed emergency rescue/medical assistance.

But, seriously, just because a car has wings, does not mean it's no longer a car.

A car is a wheeled vehicle, capable of driving on the road. It helps that the vehicle be street legal, which the Transition is said to be.

      So, again...I ask...

...why is this not a flying car? Other than the fact that it "looks" like a plane?

Well that aint a car at all.

We wont have flying cars untill we finally figure out how to create anti gravity which will probably be a long long long ways off.

Then I guess they just freakin' figured it out, then, didn't they.

I'm going to ask this one more time: How is that car, that you saw in the video flying off the ground, NOT A FLYING CAR?
It's a car. It flies. What more do you want out of the definition of a flying car?

"but omgclyde it doeznt go hi enuff off teh grownd!"
It flew off the ground. It's a flying car.

"but omg dude, it's wings arnt big enuff to be a flying car!"
Well, they're apparently big enough for the car to fly. It's a flying car, did you forget?

      MUST I CONTINUE?
