Thread: Proud to be an American... wait, that's not a country.... ?

Here in Brazil, there is a rise on the use of "estadounidense', which would be like united-statian. I don't see that working in English, though.

No... not at all.

You can call yourself a Brazilian AND an American. It's just not fair!! Do Brazilians ever refer to themselves as Americans? Or maybe South Americans?

I guess what I'm getting at... if someone in your country calls himself an American, is it assumed they're from the US?

First off calling yourself an American is fine. Every one knows an American is from the USA. Ever read the name, the United States of AMERICA. America is the name of our country. We are the United States of America. People call us Americans because we are from America.

No one introduces themself by the continent they live in. "What are you? I am an american from canada." Who says that? No one does.

If you want to be picky about it though, you simply use your state. New Yorker, Nevadan, Mississippian.

Yes, they do. That doesn't make it right, though. People just accept it, but dislike it.

I'm a Sao Paulian. I bet you don't know what that is.. Sao Paulo is a state of Brazil, just like Parana, Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Amazonas... Well you get the point. You're not forced to know the names of my states, why am I forced to know yours?

I understand what you're saying, but essentially it just bugs me that when we say we're Americans it really isn't a unique designation of a country. Canadians are Americans... so are Mexicans.

It's like if you lived in France but let's say France was just called The United Colonies of Europe because when it was settled the settlers were arrogant self-absorbed dickheads and didn't think the rest of the Europeans amounted to anything. So instead of calling themselves French they'd have to say they're... what? Europeans? European Colonials?

The rest of the world ACCEPTS that when we call ourselves Americans we're referring to the US, but it's still really an entire continent... two of them in fact.

If you live on the North American continent, you are North American.

If you live on the South American continent, you are South American.

If you live in the United States of America, you are American.

Makes enough sense for my level of caring. I don't see why it matters. Besides, groups of people are named by whatever most people wish to call them. It doesn't matter so long as it is understood what group is being referred to.

Hang on a sec, they all call themeselves american? I thought it was really by the name of the country in the first place that you went by. Canada, calls themeselves canadian. Brazil call themeselves Brazillian? ;p. Mexico call themeselves Mexican.

There are a lot of Europeans: Germans, Danes, Swiss etc.

There are also a lot of Americans: Canadians, Mexicans, Argentines, and... um... Americans? US citizens?

Do you begin to see the issue? America does not designate a COUNTRY... it's a freakin' CONTINENT!
