      Infra-Red Glasses

Alright, my mind is set -
I'm making Infra-Red glasses. But, no, I don't want those big, bulky goggles. I want a little pair of clear glasses that don't help my vision any. You know, those ones that make certain people look kool and certain people look like douchebags. I want something I can where all day, every day.

Here's a short description of how I will see things that I stole from some guy's website -
The world will become EXTREMELY BIZARRE. Wait a couple of minutes until your eyes grow accustomed to the darkness. Then the bright pink clouds drift in the dark sky above the frosty white trees. The world is dusk, yet the sun still shines. Car tail-lights blaze brightly. The houses and roads are dark. But the grass! The trees! They are frosty blazing red, like snow which has been sprayed with cherry Kool-aid powder. Everyone's clothes are altered. Blue-jeans are almost white. Some black clothing turns light grey. The artwork of T-shirts is almost invisible, and everyone's hair is grey.

Anyway, I am motivated by how the world will look to me. I won't let anybody else wear them. At all. That would ruin the individuality of my vision. But, the thing is, you typically use goggles to build these. Like, big welding goggles. I need glasses.

How could I go about this?? I know how I'm going to get the supplies, that part isn't very hard, it's the actual process I'm worried about.
      Any help is appreciated.

It can't be done without cutting edge nano technology, technology that you don't have access to, and even then, you would still end up with a pair of completely black glasses. The problem is that there really is no way to make infrared light visible to the human eye, without the aid of electronics.

A standard digital camera can pick up infrared. Don't believe me? Aim a remote control at it and take a picture, I'll bet you can see a light coming from the end of it. TV remotes transmit in infrared.

I love Bill Beatty! I just rediscovered him yesterday, and I wanted to make IR goggles so badly!

First of all though, you'll need to be very careful that you have UV protection in place. Second of all, your 'glasses' will need to make light-tight contact with your face, as no light can get in between them and your eyes or they won't work.

Lastly, if you end up ordering any cobalt blue filters or have some leftover materials please let me know! I would love to pay the postage for you and get my hands on that stuff.

Also, Marvo, Beatty points out that although the human eye is generally known to only be sensitive to waves up to 700 nm, it does have a tiny bit of sensitivity to IR light. It's just that the light needs to be very strong, and not be washed out by regular visible light. The idea is to make filters which kill off all of the regular light, leaving only the small amount of IR light around on a sunny day. Once your eyes open up wide enough to properly see this light, you're seeing in IR! The problem, of course, is that if you're not careful you'll get a dilated eye full of UV radiation and get snow blindness. Not fun.

I've heard of regular photographic or slide film being used for IR filters, as well as the inside of floppy disks. But those are generally used to put over the lens digital cameras. Not sure if they would work for making goggles, but they are cheap enough and easily obtainable, so you could easily experiment with them.

Except that with this project one would not be trying to cut out IR. The idea is to cut out all of the other visible wavelengths (including UV) as thegnome54 already stated.

With these if I created a I.R L.E.D Flash light would the area be illuminated or would the L.E.D's be to weak? Also, during the day what exactly happens, can someone please explain? Thanks.

Not in my case. I want something I can wear and still look normal to outsiders. Yet, on the inside, everything has changed.

      Also, Marvo, no. Simply, no.
Infra-Red goggles are used by the military, and regular old maniacs like myself.
      (Even though you don't exist.)

That's not going to be possible unless you regularly wear glasses that make full contact with your face on all sides.

Alternatively, you could commission some contact lenses that block all visible light up to 700nm but let through infrared. You would need to either make them UV proof as well, or wear really good sunglasses - or else you will probably get snow blindness.

Also, it would probably cost you an arm and a leg.

      Make some goggles.

      That's a brilliant idea‼
I might just have to make the damn goggles, though :L
