      OMFG I got dreads!

After wanting them for quite a while now and after a lot of back and forth I did it.

Today I went through the rather long and painful ordeal of getting dreadlocks.

I'm still not sure if it actually happened, or if I'm dreaming.

      Day 1:

      Spoiler for Crappy Webcam Picture:

Now I have to take good care of them, so they will hopefully look like I want them to in time.

Weeeiiiirrd. I'm feeling a mix of super excited and scared shitless.

If you're interested, I'll keep you updated in here. Plus, I'm grateful for any advise or am happy to answer questions.

They look good on you. Is it that it's a big image change that scares you?

Maybe a little, but probably not too much.

I'm not really sure why exactly. I just hope they will turn out the way I want them to.
(They don't look good enough yet, but that is normal and I'm critical when it comes to myself)

Plus.. my mother is visiting tomorrow

      edit:
(actually, there's quite a lot going on right now.. maybe I feel a little overwhelmed)

If honesty allowed, I think they look absolutely awful on you. It makes you look like a real weirdo. Sorry.

I'm a wee bit jealous, as I'll have to get a haircut and quite possibly kill my beard this week for job-hunting purposes

They do look good on you, mate, and better yet when you can tie them up. I saw a lot of peoples with fat dreads down to their asses this past weekend

Fair enough. It has been day one and they need a while to develope.
Especially in the first couple of months there is a lot to do.
(Btw.: not the best picture either, but my only one so far)

Yeah, it's something I wanted to do before I can't anymore.

There are still a lot of little hairs on my head that need to grow and get integrated into the dreads. Until then it looks a little weird if I tie them together. But that's what I'm ultimately going for.

Usually something like this... "Cool...that dude has dreads...he must be fun and smoke lots of weed. I bet he's an artist too. That's probably someone I'd like to get to know. I bet he has good connections. I wonder if the rest of the hair on his body is as matted and tangled as the stuff on his head...etc. etc."

Lol.... stereotypical first impressions can be funny

Honestly they look great, but i agree with you they need a little more time before they are 'ripe' and well gathered. I had long hair when i was 13 and would keep it braided in corn-rows (really got me ridiculed in this hick ass town i lived in) and i always wanted to move a step further and get them done into dreads but didn't have the courage at that age because they do carry a certain stereotype and a certain frame of mind for first appearances. Good luck though, they look awesome on you my friend.

They look really cool, man. I've always been partial to the look of dreadlocks.

One question, though. Do you have to "re-dread" the hair that grows in after you have your hair braided? Or do you just leave it as it is?

      Wow, thanks guys.

Tomorrow I go back to the place I got them done at and will re-fit some of them.

While I think they look alright already (I don't feel I have to hide), there is definitely a lot of improvement that needs to be done. But I'm pretty sure now that they will look great on me in time and I'm really happy with the decision. They're just not done yet, but I will take good care.

I'm just getting to know all the different techniques. Today I got the book "Don't worry, Be Nappy!" in the mail by Jeffery Bradley. It got a lot of tips. What's kind of funny though is that I got somewhat different advise from the people at the afro shop, the internet (http://www.dreadheadhq.com/) and the book. I guess I'll just try and error until I find what works best for me.

Tomorrow I will spontanously (found out today and it's free for me) go to a pretty big festival. The Prodigy, Massive Attack and Porcupine Tree - fuck yea. So they will be in the right environment. And the week after that I am going to a huge electro festival. Even better. (That's why I want a second fix before I go)

So, I'll work on them, wear them in, get them locked up as soon as I can and will post a picture next time that will be muuuch better than the one in the OP. I promise. Well and maybe a few from my upcoming two weeks of fun and in between, because the locking up can take up to 8 months apparently.

So yea, my mother visited me today and she likes them. That's pretty cool, too. So far the reactions were pretty positive altogether I must say, which is nice. I'm sure I'm going to have some funny stories to tell soon.

I kinda do the same thing.

      Thanks man. And totally.

      Thanks

What I have gathered from my three sources - you should reintegrate loose and growing hairs (some say with wax, some without) into the dread with a crochet hook. But this is mainly important in the first three months, after a while the hair will start growing regularly into dreads. At this time, it's still kind of a problem, because I have to wait until the little hairs are long enough to put in, so it still looks a little wild now on top of my head. (That's why the pony tail thing doesn't really work yet).

Jeffery Bradley suggested just letting them be and having them develope naturally, but he's black and has awesome hair, so I don't think it will work for me (thin, european hair) and would end up looking crappy.

I see posting a thread in here was a good idea. Actually, because you're all so nice, you'll get a second...

Spoiler for ...crappy webcam picture with stupid ass smile:

Don't treat me like a toddler, you don't think I know all of that? I was just giving my opinon off-hand. I already admitted in my post that I was responding like a douche, but that's usually the case with brutal honesty.

And Taosaur, you're coming off as one of those pseudo-intellectuals that claims to not be influenced by race at all, which is completely contradicted by the link you posted which shows whites trying to look like blacks. So, by that logic, the white OP is also a d-bag.

Hrm, no, I'm someone who hangs out with festival-goers on a regular basis, where dreads are an ingrained part of the culture for people of all races, dating back to the '60s. Hence finding your perspective narrow-minded.

Hey man, it's not narrow-mindedness, it's just personal preference. It really has nothing to do with culture, it's just about looks.

dajo! Remember when I told you some people can pull off the dreads look and some can't? My friend, you have pulled it off with flying colors. Dreads definitely look good on you. I decided not to get dreads myself. I opted out for the two strand twists. I'm just not vibing with the whole "permanent" aspect attached to dreads. xD

And Taosaur, you're coming off as one of those pseudo-intellectuals that claims to not be influenced by race at all, which is completely contradicted by the link you posted which shows whites trying to look like blacks. So, by that logic, the white OP is also a d-bag.

Even though the style of dreadlocks is based in rastafarianism that doesn't mean dreadlocks is a style exclusive to blacks, irregardless of hair type. Seriously dude, I'm not sure if I can verbally reprimand you or straighten you out any more so than others above me already have, but seriosuly.. seriously?? I would have to say what I was most offended by was the fact that you said "I'm just going to say what everyones' thinking." Well this is what I'm thinking right now: Keep your mind two steps ahead of your tongue, the other way around will profit you none.
