In your case, I would suggest that instead of relying on a mantra to wake up, set an alarm to wake you up at a 90 min interval from the approximated time you went to sleep (about 10 minutes after laying down in bed, possibly longer for you). If you don't wake up from a dream, the next night set your alarm for 5 minutes earlier and repeat this every night until you wake up from a dream (this means you have to go to bed at a constant time every night)
Also, it's okay to have random thoughts while going to sleep, the trick with that is to try not to force yourself to have a clear head, juts let them flow around and you'll be asleep in no time.
