Would My Lucid Dreams be Affected if I Start Taking Up Sleeping Pills?

I'm having a really hard time sleeping at night. Nothing to do with chronic insomnia.. I just really have a hard time putting my mind at ease every time I'm at my parent's home... (It's Christmas break and I don't really have much of a choice but to stay with them for the holiday season)

I thought about buying some sleeping pills in the local drug store along my way home.

Only question is, would this, in any way at all, affect my likelihood of getting lucid dreams?

Well, i guess it would depend on the pill composition and the effect of it's composition on the sleep pattern. I know that benzodiazepines affect the REM sleep. But i'm ignorant on the effect of other drugs as that website seems to only contain natural produts on it's pill composition.

We're all different, but I would guess that it's probably okay. I take melatonin every so often and occasionally Valerian root and I haven't noticed any negative effect on lucid dreaming.

It's hard to tell because different things affect different people in different ways...really, the only way to find out is to try them. I've heard and read lots of things about melatonin and valerian root causing dreams that are more vivid than usual; I'm not sure about chamomile and hops, but people sometimes actually take the first two to try and induce more vivid or lucid dreams. Others seem to find that their dreams are harder to recall. I've never taken melatonin as it's prescription only here but I've tried valerian root a few times and had some vivid, weird dreams which were sometimes lucid.

It's worth trying if you think it might help you to get to sleep. Getting a good night's sleep can help with lucid dreaming, and if you only take them for a short while, even if they do end up negatively affecting your lucid dreams (though they probably won't) you can always stop taking them once you're in a situation where it's easier to sleep naturally.

sleeping pills are horribly addictive drugs. I suggest herbal supplements like valerian, chamomile. Meditation before sleep helps. melatonin, maybe. also exercising during the day helps.

Most likely it will as your mind wont be conscious enough to be lucid :)

I'm no expert but I always feel a sense that alcohol, or too much caffeine affects the overall quality of my sleep. When I used to smoke pot I felt like my nights were short but rested. I wonder if I dreamed at all. I don't have any evidence to support this, as it's just a feeling after I wake up.

From my experiences, it depends entirely on the pill. I've taken some that made my dreams more intense and lucid, and others that made me lack to recall my dreams at all. Most stuff you can buy over the counter will make them more intense from my experience (valerian root, melatonin, benadryl).
