      Question Safety of Consuming Herbs

      Hello,
after a long break from lucid dreaming, I have decided to study lucid dreaming again. Since I left, I have obtained two bitter Calea zacatechichi plants from ebay over a year ago. I have tried small amounts of this herb and found that only one leaf causes me to wake up at night or at least it allows me to remember waking up and I want to increase the dosage. I have my two plants with me today along with a new cutting I made and I want to know your thoughts regarding the consumption of mostly unresearched herbs like Calea zacatechichi. I have done some research and found that Calea Z. is not likely to be immediately dangerous but I'm concerned about potentially dangerous effects in the long term. I may be paranoid as I'm sure that more than half of the herbs and foods people eat haven't been researched well and are perfectly safe. If it wasn't for my concerns, I probably would have experimented with my plants more. Any thoughts, comments or experiences will be appreciated.

I think that calea is fairly safe, as it has a very long history of use. It tends to be quite gentle, as it has only very subtle effects on waking consciousness.

I see what you mean, but what I'm really concerned about is that Calea damages the liver or it rewires the brain, or something of the like. And regarding it's long history of use, it still concerns me that it could have these effects as only a small amount of native american knowledge about this plant has been absorbed by western studies on the effects of this plant. I guess there is not enough information on how safe it is until large long-term studies come out on how the plant effects the body. What I think I'm really asking if I can't know how safe it is, is what are possible risks about taking Calea zacatechichi as well as other herbs.

I've only seen one scientific study of Calea, and in that one there was no mention of any dangerous side effects. But Calea being something big pharma can't make any money on, there will probably not be many further studies of it ever.

If you are worried about your liver, you can have it checked medically. Also, there are many herbs known to be beneficial to the liver, and which you may take as a countermeasure - just to be (more) on the safe side: for example milk thistle, dandelion root, stinging nettle, "He Shou Wu" (also known as Fo-Ti root), and Schizandra berries. These are all thought to be very healthy. Also, there is NAC (N-Acetyl L-Cysteine), which is an amino acid known to be protective for the liver.
So ... is this the real universe, or is it just a preliminary study?

There haven't been any reports of liver toxicity. As far as rewiring the brain, powerful lucid dreams could have an impact on one's psyche and thus change one on a psychological level. However, I do not think that calea does anything to rewire the brain in and of itself.
