      Choline deficiency + veganism

Hiya! I was doing some research into foods that boost dream recall and found out about choline. I haven't eaten animal products in like 2 years (except fish oil). So that leaves out egg yolks, fish, beef liver, and dairy, which were all the main sources of choline. I eat lots of spinach, which is delivering me some choline, and nuts. But even if I maxed out on cauliflower, I would still need like 10 cups to get just 600mg choline.

So I bought 100 grams of choline bitartrate for like 10 dollars on amazon. Apparently a choline deficiency could cause brain fog and lots of symtoms I could relate to. But then again, any time I read a list of symptoms, I'm like, "Thats me!"

Most LD supp threads said to use Galantamine or Hup-A with it to inhibit the enzyme thingy. But I couldn't afford those. So do you think for someone with a choline deficiency, supplementing choline bitartrate alone (without galantamine or Hup-A) would make a difference?

I guess the powder will be here this coming Monday, so I will find out.

I also wanted to put this out there because I could see how vegan people might not realize this either. I take a multivitamin, B complex, Calcium/Magnezium/Zinc, D vitamin... (And I take fish oil even though its not vegan! I am afraid to go off it though! Its my only not vegan thing!)

Taking some Choline certainly won't hurt anything at all. It is a very good brain food as it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier. There is a post in our Supplement repository which gives a bit of info on Choline and other vitamins/compounds that it interacts with.

Thanks! Is it true that Choline Bitartrate is inferior to Alpha-GPC? I even read in some places that Choline Bitartrate doesn't even work at all.

I don't like taking magnesium when it comes to dreams. It makes you fall asleep more easily at night. But, in my very limited and whimsical study of it's effects on me, LD reduction was one of the effects. Don't take my word for it.

Thanks! Well, I take my magnesium with meals during the day anyway. But thanks for the heads up. I heard a Youtuber say that Magnesium actually gets depeleted when doing lots of dream recall so its good to have more. It can be so surprising that things like that actually have the reverse effect for some people.

I could never isolate one variable though because for example, even as I add choline (and now 100mcg huperzine-A that I ordered), the season will be changing. It will be getting warmer and sunnier. My days and weeks of practice will continue to accumulate. And my tide of insomnia could reverse and give me a tide of sleep. So I feel like there is no way to isolate the results of a single variable pretty much ever since nothing really stays constant.

Exactly. It's tricky stuff. I had regular lucids. Started taking magnesium. Had far fewer lucids. Took a break. tried again, and a similar thing happened. So I stay away. But it could easily have been something else.

Do you think its magnesium just if you take it at bed time, or any time of day? Maybe I will try cutting out the magnesium... But I am already screwing around with too many things

If I recall correctly, the Alpha-GPC is absorbed more readily by the body. I just looked in my supplement stash and Alpha-GPC is what I have.

Thanks. That was what I read. I will try the Choline Bitartrate, then maybe when I run out of that, get the Alpha-GPC. At first it looked like Alpha GPC was way more expensive but actually it isn't as much more expensive as I thought.

What about just a regular choline pill? Just pure choline? I didn't find anything about that, just the modified forms of choline, but there was a jar of pure choline for sale.

From what I read, alpha-GPC goes straight to the brain, while the others don't get there as well.

I have never tried pure Choline, so I am unable to provide any feedback on it. I do recall finding most things in a powdered form, but I personally prefer pre-loaded capsules. It's been quite a while since I did my research, but to the best of my memory the Alpha-GPC was the quickest to make it into the brain.

After a quick search, I found this article (about half-way down the page) which provides a good description of the differences between Choline Bitartrate, Alpha GPC, and CDP Choline (Citicoline).

Thanks. That makes sense. So increasing dietary choline or having choline bitartrate is different than having this choline that gets through the blood brain barrier. Well then I will definitely try Alpha GPC as my next choline, once I finish the bitartrate. Like I said, I think any form of choline would be helpful to me as I am probably deficient in it from my diet.

Did you ever try Huperzine-A? I got 60 X 100mcg coming on Monday. I want to do 100mcg the first time I wake through the night, which is usually 4 hours or so. If I took a separate dose I might like to split it so theres some during the day, but I mainly wanted to start with just the 100mcg, since I've probably never had Huperzine-A in my whole life.

      Thanks!
