OK, the main difference in this one is that it does not detect REM. It waits a specific time and then flashes lights in your eyes.
I for one cannot sleep with anything on my mask, so, if I was single or I knew it would not disturb my wife, I'd rig something similar to flash the lights in my room after a fixed time span.
It is also easy to write a small program to flash your monitor on and off, hopefully creating enough light. It could also be accompanied by sound.
$30 does not sound too excessive for the kit though. :)
