first, if you have the Dream Maker, insure that it is detecting eye movement OK. Put it in the mode where it does not wait 20 min to turn on the LED and detector. Put it on and move your eyes around. Does it detect? If not, you will need to figure out a better position relative to your eye.
Since the mask is a little intrusive, I would suggest getting a good 6 hours of sleep and then waking and putting it on. If you put it on first thing in the evening, you probably won't sleep well, and you won't be engaging in much REM sleep anyway.
My issue with the Dream Maker is that it does not report whether it went off or not. So you might wakke after wearing it for 2 hours, questioning whether it detected and sent light pulses or not. You might be tempted to turn up the light intensity because you're unsure if the lights penetrated your dream. However, light intensity might not be the issue. Mask position and sensitivity might be the challenge.
With that said, start with the light intensity pretty high.
Also, if the lights go off and you wake, hit the RT button. Dream Masks tend tp create false awakenings which of course seem very real. But in fact - you're dreaming.
