It's not programming your subconscious mind to generate a certain kind of dream.

It's your conscious mind being aware of it while it is progressing, and possibly controlling it.

What's the fun of having the dream you want if you can't control it any further once you've "locked it in" before you go to sleep?

Once you're in it, you're stuck.

With proper LDing, you can control it while you are in it. Much more fun.
