Your thoughts on the optimal electronic LD inducer?

Hi all!

For some years I have been curious about lucid dreaming, since I have spontaneously experienced a couple during my life, and thereafter investigated it a bit.

When not in school studying mechatronics engineering I enjoy creating small microcontroller powered gadgets, some soon maybe going commercial.

Combine this with my general laziness (which has prevented me from regularly keeping dream journal, and doing reality checks) and my curiosity for lucid dreaming, and what you have is me investigating building a lucid dream inducing device.

So, I would be really happy if you would share your thoughts on what would characterize the optimal device.

I prefer not using electronics and going the natural way, because I have this weird OCD thing where I have to be able to continue with my hobbies if I am lost in the middle of the desert (I could still knit with two sticks and grass, draw in the sand, etc) don't ask me why but for that reason I have not looked into electronic inducers. HOWEVER:
-It would have two options, one involving monitoring sleep and one like an MP3 player that could play soundtracks like LD-ing songs, etc.
-The other option would have a sound cue when you went into REM, that could be deactivated by eye movement. It would say, "You're dreaming. Do a reality check!"

Plain and simple.

EILD "Electronic Induced Lucid Dream" Is almost impossible and useless with no dream recall, trust me i have £150 EILD machine and i dont use it because my recall is not as good as it should be.

Something I haven't seen mentioned (and may perhaps not even be possible) is the use of electronic devices to help with WILD attempts. I've been following the 90 day WILD project and I notice that the most common complaint is falling back to sleep.

In ETWOLD, Laberge says that you can do the WILD "Count to 100" approach with someone watching you while you go to sleep. When the WILDer's eyes move in a pendulum motion and the breathing changes the person has fallen asleep. It is the job of the "watcher" to then wake the WILDer and ask them what number they had counted to before they had fallen asleep. It would be great to have an electronic device that plays the role of the watcher and gently wakes you when you've fallen asleep during a WILD attempt.

That's interesting... but what if they woke you and you were actually having a lucid dream? Could there be an eye signal for that?

I was wondering the same thing myself.

I think it's constructive to question if flashing lights really are the best cue to alert us to being in a dream. I would like a device that produces a specific sound in my ear. I'm thinking of something like the sound of a buzzing bee or fly. That's fairly specific and seems to make sense to me; as sight is our primary sense and the one we use to perceive the world around us, it seems to make sense that our brain very quickly becomes too adept at interpreting flashing lights and making them fit the events within a dream. The sound of a buzzing insect cannot be interpreted in many ways? Hear an insect buzzing in dream = you're dreaming.
