Self-aware Dream Characters

I've looked into Dream Guides, and they're obviously self-aware of their existance as dream characters--how else could they teach you to dream better?

What this thread focuses on, though, is my question: are all dream characters aware that they themselves are dream characters? I've not had the chance to ask a dream character yet; I haven't had a lucid dream in ages.

Please share your experiences, guys; they would greatly heighten my questions for which to ask my dream characters upon my next lucid dream.

Based on my experiences with dream characters, and my interpretation of how they act, I would say most of them are not. There seem to be a few that act a little different though, as if when they look at you, they are incredibly aware. Pay attention to how people around you look in real life, and you'll notice that some seem to have a more intense look in their eyes, one that seems to be far more intense and aware than most. I also find that sometimes in life I kind of drift through a day, and suddenly there will be a moment where I essentially become lucid, and find reality sharpened and more vivid. Look for comparisons between lucidity in people in life, and awareness in DC's, and I think you'll be able to answer that question for yourself.
I'm still unsure as to the nature of these, let's call them 'lucid' DC's, but there is no doubt in my mind that they exist, and that not every DC is like this.

Most of my dream characters seem to not be aware that they are dream characters. I think if the dreamer isn't lucid, then the dream characters can't really be lucid either.
Sometimes when I become lucid a dream character might acknowledge in some way or another that they know they are part of a dream. A few times I've had lucid dreams with dream characters who knew it was a dream, but seemed to think they were dreamers too.
There are different kinds of dream characters, with varying degrees of awareness and intelligence.

My dream characters are full of denial which is annoying, because lucid dreams would be so much more fun if the DC's were lucid as well.

In my lucid dreams, some dream charecters are aware that they are DCs but not all. My parents never know that they are dream charecters but I have become lucid because dream charecters like my teacher and my dreamguide have told me.

Thanks guys. Have any of you witnessed a character actually becoming lucid? Sort of the way we do when we realise we're dreaming? I'm pretty sure the reaction I had during my first lucid was a hilarious one.

Well iv had a lucid dream where iv asked ased this guy in robes if i was dreaming and he said i was and i asked him why is it important we dream and he said it was so we can see your future i dont know who this was atall but he seemed very etheric and didnt feel the part of a DC. maybe a spirit guide. I beleive dreams are so much more than just a unreal fantasy land where we are free. Connecting with your higher self unlocking secrets within. Also hearing stories of people who have died recently connecting with you and telling you its ok now and all that malarky if you know what i mean. my very first lucid dream was very long and i convinced my parents that they accepted me as a foreigh person that i was new into the dream world its hard to explain but im shore some of you will understand sorry if this is all mumbled up abit lol its late haha just got back from work and had a few pints and watched shutter island haha great film makes you think alot hehe. Oh yh!!!

damm i wish i had interesting DCs, all of mine seem to be the "THIS IS NOT A DREAM!!!" type

Its a great question.

When you think about how much stuff the brain has to generate (thats if it is just all in the mind), from the dream scenery which is complex in itself, to the dream plot, the individual consciousness's of each DC, as well as all your own actions, thoughts and behaviours, along with your physical functions - It really is an astonishing amount.

Is the brain really capable of all this? or is there some kind of dream/astral plane that we visit or draw from?

Just a theory about this DC, but maybe she seemed more intelligent because I paid more attention to her, paying attention to something would make it more vivid and detailed.

I havent had so many LDs, but so far pretty many DCs seem to know that its a dream (dont know if they know that they are DCs though:roll:) but dont care about it.

Isn't there a question prior to this? Namely: are dream-characters actually other entities itself, or just objects from our subconcious? If the latter, then they're obviously not self-aware (unless our conciousness can be split up), but can only act as if aware.

If i get the question right...

It is all simulated by your brain, and there is no reason your brain couldn't simulate another entity in your dream, if this entity was actually self aware is another question. Its very similar to the question of if you teach a computer to learn could it/is it actually self aware? Even if it sais it is self aware, is it just stating that because the programming tells it to do that through learning of other sources, or is it really self aware? I don't believe it is, but this can also qualify for anything your brain creates in dreams.

In my dream last night while being lucid, I went up to a set of twins who had a look of fear when they saw me. Like a, "what the hell are you and what you are doing here, you new or something?" look. I then asked if they were real and they replied "Yes, of course!" and then I gave them high fives ( and felt their skin, which was strange!). Now if that means they are aware in a way, I dunno. One of them also made a portal for me because I wasn't able to, but I had to ask one to make it. They did not automatically know what I wanted to do, which of course could be that my mind needs to verbally try to assign a task to complete it. They seemed aware of themselves and their capabilities, but that could be an illusion. Not sure if they are aware of themselves as dream characters within a dream, or just illusions formed by my mind.

Maybe it's nitpicking, but what we are talking about is: do these dream-characters have an awareness of their own? In this thread the question started out with "are they aware of themselves?" Which maybe is the same, but was slightly confusing to me at first glance.

But it's a very interesting question! Are all these people just products of our subconscious, or really seperate individual entities? This relates to another question: in dreams, are we really in another world seperated from our brain/body? Or is it all just happening inside ourselves?

When having a lucid dream it all seems so real and yet so strange to think that it's all just our own subconscious. Then again... how can consciousness seperate things, when maybe we all are One and there is only One always?

First off, I wonder if anybody had asked the characters in a lucid dream, if they were themselves. Why not do that? Sometimes if you ask them, they will say "No." I know this, because I have done it before. They look guilty when they say "No." I think they are what we think that person represents in real life. I mean, if I were this person, this is how I would act. If it is someone you have never seen before, maybe it's just "extras" that you came up with. I think they are ourselves, and that they are not aware, unless you are.

I think it's both. I am a Christian who is very tolerant of other people's beliefs, and I've run across some dream characters who were simply projections of my subconscious, but I've run across others who I just absolutely, for some reason, know are real. I see it like this: If God can make physical beings, then why can't he make consciousnesses without physical form? There sometimes is the question of which is real between dream and reality, but I think the answer is neither. It is the combination of the two that is truly real.

Just as an example, once I confronted my "mom" in a dream, telling her she was just a DC in my dream trying to fool me to get my attention/energy. At first she looked offended, then angry and finally she transformed into some other DC girl who recognized her ephemeral existence as a DC and asked me not to "kill" her but to keep her "alive" in the dream plane. She was genuinely desperate about "stopping existing" once I got out of the dream.
I also lucified many DCs which I actually believe were real dreamers. They became aware they were in a dream and learned from me some tricks like RC and flying.

I have made several DCs lucid, generally they ask me for proof when I tell them about me dreaming and all that. Mostly thats what I expect them to say, so of course thats the kind of reaction I get.

Would it be possible for a dream character to become real?

Only a small portion of the dream characters I've encountered know they're in a dream. Almost invariably, they become recurring characters in later dreams. It's funny how desperately the "non-lucid" ones struggle to disprove your lucidity sometimes... ;)

Taking that in another direction, it's certainly possible for a dream character to change what you perceive as "real." A subset of what I call real is just fantasy to others. Where do you draw the line personally?

Interesting. Do you have any of these dreams of these people in your DJ?

this is a fascinating thread. i finally managed to meet up with a mate that i have talked to about dreaming before, and it was in a really stable lucid too. he looked so lucid too that i just had to quiz him about it. i asked him if this was just another one of those normal dreams where he wasnt really there, or was he actually astrally projecting at the time. he just said something about being a dream within a dream within a dream and then i cant really remember him being there after that.

i had a conscious character in a dream last week who kept telling me to use my left hand for everything like they were trying to get me to balance my brain hemispheres. i do this anyway so it was probably just an internal prompt, but it got me thinking. anyone had any benefits from using their left sides in a dream? i also think i met a guide last night. he just looked at me intensely and said "so what do you want to know"? i just got a bit too excited and faded out, but this is at least progress from the fear i initially felt when confronted by seemingly conscious dc's. i think its a bit odd because it starts to make you question whether there actually are any consequences from the things you do in dreams. its certainly made me want to treat everyone with as much respect as possible and that can only be a good thing

It's a very interesting question. I had a surprising experience last night when I learned that dream characters (DCs) are quite unaware that they are in a dream. I went lucid in my dream last might and was doing weird things as usual. Suddenly, my sister notices me and questions about my behavior. I tell her that I am in a dream and free to do things I like. She challenges me that it's not a dream but real. I was quite confident that it's a dream and tried to convince her by giving some proofs. I woke up doing all this and realized that I didn't really need to do any of those because she was just a dream character and I wasn't achieving anything by convincing her.

I met a friend of mine in a recent lucid dream. I greeted her and told her that she was dreaming, instead of possibly insulting her by suggesting that she was in my dream and not real. She didn't seem to care, though.

On the right path, but getting to dream characters becoming real.

I had a dream last night that has been on my mind all day and i have been googling trying to see if anyone could relate to it and i found this sight so i must share.Ive lucid dremped about 3 times before but last night was different. In my other lucid dreams i woke up in the dream realizing its only a dream because something bad was happening and i wasnt afraid anymore because it was obvious to me it was a dream and what was happening wasnt real but i never tried controlling it. Last night I was in my dream completely aware the whole time it was a dream without anything in particular triggering it and i was definitly using it to my advantage. I was at a friends house and there was probably about 10 of us hanging out in the living room and i knew the whole time they werent real and us hanging out wasnt reality it was only a dream. I thought it was hilarious that they had no clue and thought they were real. THen i started telling them that this was my dream and everything that is happening isnt real just to see there response. Of course none of them believed me and i looked crazy to them. So like some of the previous stories the Dream characters started asking me to prove to them it was my dream. So i was starting thinking of ways and i thought that maybe if i record this conversation on my cell phone and show it to them when i wake up they wont remember in real life and they will believe me. and then i realized that was completely retarded because i was in my dream how was i suppost to record that without my cell phone which is by me in the bed.so i was like okay ill wake up and start recording and go back to sleep...well that was stupid because that would only be recording me asleep. So then basicly i realized there was no way to convince my friends that this was my dream and this wasnt real. It was just crazy...one of the craziest. I hope i explained okay and didnt confuse anyone to horribly.

A wall of text, but thanks for the contribution. I've been watching a few dream-related movies; one that stands out is Waking Life, where many of the dream-characters the main character interacts with often behave differently when the dreamer becomes lucid, but often act as dream guides giving advice on the dream world when the dreamer is in a subconscious, unknowing state of mind. It's really quite interesting to see these takes on dreams.
