FINALLY, first LD since acquiring more interest (first one in years, but trying for about 2 weeks)

It's kind of a weird story though. It was def a DILD but I didnt do any reality checks. I was dreaming, regular dreams, and all of a sudden I just knew that I was dreaming. I immediately start to feel the dream fading so I rub my hands together but it's not working very well, losing awareness I begin to slap myself in the face and this seems to stabilize the dream. I proceed to sit down at my living room table and decide to try and make something appear. I conjure a square wooden box with a top lid on it (exactly what I imagined). Then I try to conjure an item inside the box. It works, the item inside is also wooden and looks like some sort of pipe with hinges and joints. For some reason I then decide to masturbate (don't ask why I didnt decide to have sex, I have no idea, masturbation seemed like the best idea haha). I go to my bathroom which in this dream was like my regular bathroom except way way longer (the distance from the sink to the toilet was probably 25 feet or so). I sit down but before I can begin I get too excited and finish. I become less lucid as I see my grandfather appear at the bathroom door. I open the door and he says "We all know that you're not playing dodgeball every Saturday like you say you are". And I go on to explain to him that in fact I am (In real life, I do play dodgeball every Saturday with a huge group of people). Then I wake up. The first thing I think about after waking is the possibility this might be a false awakening. So I begin to roll myself out of bed except I continue rolling and lose control and get dizzy and then BAM, I actually wake up. As soon as I awaken I remember the masturbation and check for wet undies haha. And to my amazement, I did not actually ejaculate in real life. This is the very first time I have ever ejaculated in a dream but didn't in real life. I tried going back to sleep and kept trying to WILD for about an hour and a half with no luck whatsoever. Everytime I started seeing HI I would have a crucial itch and have to scratch it. This happened several times and finally gave up.

To answer your question, I'm not totally sure how I knew...it was just one of those things "I just knew". You know? One moment I was in a regular dream and the next, I became lucid. As I said, I did not have to perform any reality checks. I guess I could explain it as a sort of feeling, like all of a sudden I had a feeling that there were no consequences and I was free. So I quickly deduced that I was inside a dream and thus began my experience :)
