Exciting Night: Feels Like a Breakthrough

So for the past few weeks I have been practicing and tinkering with various lucid dreaming methods. I have been keeping a dream journal and doing reality checks all throughout the day. I have been having a lot of success with improving my recall. For about 3 weeks now I have been able to remember 2 to 3 dreams a night. But I was getting frustrated as I have come close to attaining lucidity multiple times but always wake up when I suspect I am in a dream due to excitement.

For about two weeks now I have been practicing meditation every day for 20 to 30 minutes. Meditation has helped me increase my focus and awareness tremendously. Last night was the first time I felt that I was actually able to even get close to lucidity since the first time I accidentally did it.

I layed still in my bed just clearing my mind. After about 10 minutes I started to imagine myself driving to work. I figured this would work well for me as I would be able to easily replay a drive to work in my head. I let my mind relax as I pictured the road in front of me. Then I allowed any images or thoughts to just happen. Suddenly my dad as in the driver seat next to me eating an apple. He told me to pull over at the next gas station and I did. As soon as I pulled over I remembers that there are no as stations on my way to work and I knew I was dreaming. My dad disappeared and the gas station disappeared and the whole landscape turned into a desert. I was stoked. The problem was that before I could do anything, a giant head (and I mean massive) floated down from the sky directly at me. For anyone who has seen Watchmen, the head looked kind of like Dr. Manhattan. The head was bald, dark blue, and had white eyes. As the head got closer, it became harder to move. By the time the head was close enough to touch, I was pinned to the ground paralyzed. I thought that if I talked to the head I might be able to get up. I very consciously and clearly yelled, "who are you?" The head stared at me for what seemed to be over a minute. Then it opened its mouth and let out a deep moan. I could feel my body shaking and the dream slowly faded and I woke up.

Any advice or comments will be greatly appreciated

Sorry for such a long post but I had to share this.

      Thank you for reading,

Even if you consider it a failure, that's a really interesting dream! Next time you feel yourself waking up, just chillout and relax.Don't get frustrated about waking up, just wait it out and more often than not you will re-enter the dream. Also, if everything just blacks out, try imagining that you have a pair of "Dream Goggles" resting on your head, and pull them down. I used to have Lucids that would black out all the time, and that was the only technique that worked for me.

I take it this a WILD though, right? You should be stoked! (In my opinion). I have so much trouble with WILDing. =/

      Hello Alucinor,

Yes it was a WILD. Since meditating I've been finding it easier to start inducing WILDs. The only hard part is trying to remain calm and just let the images appear in the dreamscape while staying focused enough to remember that youre dreaming and calm enough to remain asleep. If you aren't practicing meditation I'd recommend it. I've seen a difference in dreaming and waking life.

Thanks a ton for the advice. I'll try to remember the goggles.

Wow, great job! I have a hard time with WILDs as well, and I suck at visualization so I always lose myself when the imagery comes. Anyway, I see you're very good at visualization. Question though, did you feel any transition from the time you started visualizing to the point you knew it was a dream? It really amazes me how seamless transitions can be

Maybe it's a dream and if I scream, it will burst at the seams.

      Good morning paigyemps,

There was a transition. Starting out I made myself completely relaxed. Then I started to imagine myself driving to work. The trick here was to focus on my driving; not the details of my environment. As I vizualized myself driving slowly in my neighborhood, stopping at every stop sign, using my blinker, and pressing a little harder on the gas pedal once I exited my neighborhood, details started to appear without any conscious effort from me. Little things appeared that my conscious self would never have remembered to add to the dreamscape. As the detail of the dream increased, my lucidity seemed to decrease. The only thing that saved me was that I was driving on a route that I know very well. So when I pulled over at the gas station that doesn't exist on my real drive to work, I knew I was dreaming. Lucidity kicked immediately.

If you are interested in WILDing, try what worked for me:

      1. Relax as deeply as possible.
      2. Imagine yourself performing a familiar task in a familiar place.
      3. Focus in your task; not your surroundings.
      4. As details, people, and objects appear, let them simply exist. Don't force anything.
(I found the best way to not force things is ask myself, "I wonder what will happen next."
      5. As you are in a familiar place in the dream world, you are likely to see something out of place or that you know doesn't exist in the real world.
      6. Do a reality check. (in the real world, any time I see that something has changed, I inspect it in detail while I asking myself if this is a dream. Example: girlfriend put a new mirror in the bathroom. I looked at it and touched the mirror asking myself if this was real.)

I hope this helps somebody. I'm about to try this method again. Wish me luck! I will report my success or failure within the next few hours.

Frustrating morning. People in my house were being loud and I kept waking up. Used the driving technique again. I WAS SOOO CLOSE! While I was driving, a median that doesn't exist was in the road. Also a woman was riding in the passenger seat. Then she wanted to get out of the car. Every time I got close to falling completely asleep, somebody in the house would slam the front door shut or a dog would bark.

It's my day off so I'm going to spend some time meditating later and try for an afternoon nap while nobody else is home. After making these huge strides in causing these little hallucinations, I'm confident I will LD this afternoon if I'm able to fall asleep.

Success!!! I have purposefully induced lucid dreaming for the first time. The method that I posted in this thread works. I used my drive to work method. This time I drove until I arrived at work. I did not become fully lucid until I was talking to a coworker who I had never met before. He and I got into an argument. I immediately realized something was strange. That's when I became lucid. It was amazing. I usually feel like im in a fog when I dream, and that my vision is very narrow. As soon as I became lucid everything changed. I became conscious of the 50-something people in the room. Everything became detailed. Every character had a face and a voice. I started yelling at the character I had been arguing with. I wanted to see how far I could push him. All he did was give me this smug look and say the opposite of whatever I said. So I said screw it and punched him in the face. Nobody else in the room even noticed. Then the dream started to fade. I forgot to use the dream goggles technique but I did remember to look at my hands. This caused the whole scene to change. All of a sudden I was in an old western saloon. I walked outside and there was nothing but dessert. Then I slowly woke up.

This felt different than regular dreams I've had. Usually my dreams feel like old memories. This felt and still feels like it just took place a few minutes ago. It didn't feel like dreaming. It felt like I was really doing these things.

This experience has given me confidence and I know that there will be many more lucid dreams to come.

Thank you everyone for your support and advice.

      Hell yeah!

Sounds like a successful LD to me.

And as time goes on, and your practice your recall, even your regular dreams will begin to start feeling like experiences, rather than just foggy memories!
