Yeah so after the first time I managed to fly in a lucid dream, which I did quite well... since then I have had a couple of difficulties. The last 3 times I've attempted to fly I only go up a little ways and come crashing down on my head which causes me to bounce a little bit and then land... It's actually pretty amusing when I'm awake to think about it... but when I'm trying to go somewhere in a dream and instead just repeatedly bounce on my head it is REALLY frustrating... I discovered that the thing that tends to cause me to come falling out of the sky is when I look down. The obvious remedy being don't look down unless you intend to land. Doing this then causes me to ascend to the preposterous heights (I.E. I can't stop going up) Once I try to stop ascending and look down to find where I wanna go... you guessed it... *insert sound of Wile-E-Coyote falling off of a cliff*
Each time I progress to the point where I've just about got it... I can stay airborne for a good while before landing normally. The thing that strikes me as odd and frustrating is that I seem to need to relearn how to do it EVERY SINGLE TIME I become lucid. Every time I become lucid and go up, the second I look down I KNOW I am gonna fall. Obviously knowing this is what causes it to happen, but why is my mind insisting on ignoring the facts that:
1. I have flown before
2. I am well aware that I am capable of flying in the dream world
3. and by the end of this dream I will fly again
Point number 3 is the most important, because while I eventually relearn to fly every time, I waste the entire lucid dream in the process. The other interesting thing to note here is in addition to knowing I am gonna fail at first, I also know I will succeed eventually... Why can't I know I'm going to succeed on the first try? >_<
So my two questions are:
First off, and I realize this is a mind over matter type thing here, what can I do to keep myself from having to relearn how to fly every time I become lucid?
Secondly, has anyone else experienced the "can't stop going up" phenomena?

The only time I was able to fly, I was propelled by letting go of a rollercoaster I was hanging onto. But, I kept going up until I reached the clouds, then I saw a giant cloud palace, upside down for some reason, but nonetheless. I woke up soon after, so I didn't have a chance to see if I would keep going up or fall.

The next time you find yourself having difficulty with flying, stop and think about just what your situtation is. You are dreaming your own dream, which means it's all in your head, so you pretty much have control over whatever goes on. Thoughts along that line often help me gain better control in dreams, although it somtimes feels like there is a certain amount of resistance.
You could also try using a flying aid - anything to help yourself believe you can fly, be it a jetpack, broomstick, or a jet-propelled easy chair. Anything that works.

lol that was my first lucid dream! i couldnt stop going up, but it got pretty freaky after awhile because i couldnt figure out how to stop ( looking down didnt work for me) anyway i dont have any way to fix it but just thought id tell u you're not alone lol

yeah, i still sometimes have trouble with going either up or down against my will in lucids.
find it helps to focus on an object near where you would arrive, and "zoom in"...sort of latch onto it mentally and pull yourself in.
oh, and perhaps its only an idiosyncrasy, but i find crossing my legs has always stabilized my flight and given me almost complete control.
