Talking

I have the ability that I can bail-out out of a dream that's spinning into a nightmare. I had this since I was a kid.

In one of my childhood dreams I was chased by a monster (or something else I just had to get away from). I was running along a street ajencent to a canal with the creature breathing in my neck. In my opinion my only option to escape my doom was to jump in the canal and swim away from it, hoping that the creature couldn't swim.
So i did... and... I woke up.

Sitting in my bed, drenched in seat, I immediately remembered what just happened and being in shock that I could alter my dreams apparantly locked this escape-sign in my mind. In present times I can still jump into any liquid pool (or even splash water in my face) and wake up from any nightmare.

Sometimes the nightmare are realy strong and I litteraly have to peel my eyes open (this is propably not real and a half-dream of some sort) but I allways win and wake-up using this watertechnique.

The problem is that I'm not allways this lucid. Sometimes I get the signs and sometimes I don't bother that the birds are flying backwards or I'm having this great conversation...with my dog.

By finding this website I hope i can train my skills I apparently allready have.

Does anyone else have this bail-out option in their dreams? What's your bail-out?

My Bail Out is when i'm having a less than plesent dream, A "on screen" B Button sarts flashing in the corner like in a video game marked with "ABORT", and if I "press" it I instantly wake up.

Usually in nightmares I'm quite lucid and can alter the situation by making it into something more possitive. ONe time I dreamt of a tornado coming to our house and, being terrified of the storm, changed it by the tornado turning into a thunderstorm till that storm went away, too. Or if I can't alter it, I find control through praying, since many of my dreams involve demons for some reason. Then they go away. Or I'll shapeshift, but that takes more focus but in those lucid dreams I become strong enough to fight the enemy. I think big animals, tigers, wolf, aligator...like those kinds. Or, I can realize it's a dream and open my eyes.

My bailout has always been to shut my eyes hard and I will either wake up or the scenery will be different. Interesting story about the water though!!

Thanks for the reactions so far. Keep 'em coming. The one with the onscreen button is such a good one.

I find it interesting that I personaly have more ease with altering/escaping nightmares, but have more difficulty making dreams lucid. I'll have to study that one more.

I guess that, if you experience a lucid dream or a self-provoked nightmare bail-out at a very young age, this experience is so overwhelming that it locks into your subconcious for future benefits. I can still use the water trick more than 10 years later.

I hope they make this topic a sticky

This is what I do too - I have to force myself to open my eyes and then I can escape the bad dream. The problem I usually have is that when I close my eyes again, I reenter the dream continuing where I left off. So I have to force myself to stay awake for a couple minutes and think about something else, then allow myself to go back to sleep.

I clap my hands over my ears and yell, "Wake up!" However, since I discovered LDing, I say to the monster or whatever, "This is my dream, and you can't hurt me!" I usually get an, "Ok." Sometimes I just blink my dream eyes and my real eyes open.

Sorry, I've only had one nightmare in, like, thirteen years; but I escaped that one, by "Flushing the dream down the drain". I "Pulled a plug" somewhere, and the dreamscape swirled away; I also happened to be lucid at the time. (One of my three before-this-site lucids.)
