Hey, first of all, welcome to DV.
Secondly, what you had is called false awakenings and its very normal. You shouldn't be worried. It's physically impossible to be stuck in a dream forever. It's been proven scientifically (by Stephen LaBerge) that dream time is the same as real time. That is, a dream will never last more than the REM period will last... which would be an hour at the very, very most (more like, 30 or 45 minutes).
As far as being able to tell the difference between dream and reality, well, that's to be expected. To our brains, there is actually no difference between dream and reality. The brain receives information from both dream and reality in the exact same manner... the only difference being that in reality, the information comes from the outside. In a dream, the information comes from within our brains.
Anyway, you should take a read at the different RCs (reality checks) available that can serve to prove yourself whether you are dreaming or awake. There are some techniques listed in the Lucid Dream Induction Techniques section in the main website. Here's the link.
Some of these techniques are:
Try putting your right index finger through your left hand. If the finger goes through, then you are dreaming.
Try plugging your nose with your fingers, and breathing. If you can breathe with your nose plugged, you are dreaming.
Try looking at a clock. Now look away and then look back at the clock. If the time is different, or if the clock looks odd, then you are probably dreaming.
The list goes on. There are infinite ways of assuring yourself whether or not you are dreaming, and you will probably benefit from reading around the forums.
check out some of the tutorials and explanations given in the main page of this website, I think you'll find the information very helpful. Here's the link: www.dreamviews.com
Good luck on your dreaming. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Oh, and once again, Welcome to Dream Views!
