Reality is Too Difficult to Discern

Quite, in fact, while in a dream.
Especially when you are in a familiar setting with familiar people.

I've been down all day about this near lucid dream.

The vivid portion of my dream began with me standing in front of my house; I may have been dreaming beforehand, but I can't recall exactly. Quite suddenly I thought, "Hey, am I dreaming?" Here's where things got complicated. In my last lucid dream, which was about three nights ago, I began it by flying upward. So you can see my logic would be skewed in that I may think that flying would come naturally. Unfortunately, it does not if you have even the slightest doubt whether you are dreaming.

I ran and jumped but didn't go upwards. I simply landed back on the ground. My brief lucidity, which I wouldn't even call being lucid since I still wasn't aware, faded and I figured I must be awake. So I continued down my street to the end of the block and stood on the corner. There were a few people there so I talked to them a bit. It may actually been about dreaming.

      It ended.

You can see that I would be more then a bit disappointed by this. It gets worse, though.

Later this morning I had another dream in which I was standing with a friend talking with them about the dream I had an hour ago! I told them that it was nearly lucid and really should have realized it. He began throwing a rusty metal rod around so I backed off.

      I woke up shortly thereafter.

I'm very sad that I missed two golden oppourtunties to become lucid.
Any tips for reality checks that I could do on the fly? I've already been doing the 'breathe through nose' test but while in the dream I can never seem to remember to do it.

For me, its kinda like just "doing" instead of "trying" in a dream. When you realize that its a dream, you simply have to think "I'm going to fly there" or "I'm on a beach now", or just imagine a beach and you'll be there. Because you try to jump in your dream, you will fall, because you're jumping. As soon as you realize its a dream, start taking control!

pinch your nose closed and breather through it. Check out the Relaity Check tutorial, there's lots of RC's there.

I already know most of the reality checks; digital clocks, finger through hand, breathe through nose, check lights, and so on, but I'd like to know what works for you guys.

You have to excuse me for laughing when I'm reading this, but the second dream you had.. hahaha hilarious.. it's so ironic haha, that was really fun..

Well good luck, just get the habit in to do RC's when talking to friends?

      Here's what i think,

You're still grounded by reality because of the familiar surroundings you find yourself in when you're dreaming.

When's the last time you were outside your house?

Probably the same day you had the dream.

The reality is, it's more difficult to become fully lucid when you're dreaming about familiar surroundings you come across in your everyday life, unless ofcourse, something totally off the wall happens that sets off a reality check alarm.

As weird as swinging a rusty metal rod may sound, its probably not enuff to set off the lucid alarm.

Its best to find yourself in a place you remember, but havent been to in quite a while, or to be in a place you cant recall at all.
In the begining there was flight...
