False awakenings definitely suck when you miss them, but I love them nowadays.. Its almost like a extra life in mario or something :). Really get into the habit of doing RC's when you wake up, it will help tremendously.
Also, if you need to clarify your dreams or you feel as though you may be losing lucidity there are some great methods and tutorials laying around the forums to help you out. Some of my favorite are:
-Looking at hands, finger through palm etc.. also try to bend your fingers backwards. (Obviously not to hard in case you really are awake :P)
-Look at a mirror, almost never 'right' for me.
-Spin around a couple of times, fast as you can.
-Touch something, rough/abstract textures are the best I find.
-Imagine the feeling of flying/falling.
-Plug your noise and close your mouth, try to breath.
Really quickly want to say theres probably 50 millions ways of doing it, I find the key is to just distract yourself away from the thought of your real body (Laying in bed). Doing anything tactile in the dream should take your awareness off that thought and let you focus on whats going on around you.
By that I mean when your spinning in a dream for example, your obviously not really spinning.. but by inducing that feeling of motion you take your awareness off your brick of a body laying in bed. If you are rubbing some bark on the side of the tree that doesn't exists, or gazing upon a dream characters blotchy red face (:p) you just lose yourself in the dream, your body isnt there anymore. Best thing you can do is try a whole bunch of stuff, belief is everything
Alot of my false awakenings are basically triggered by my thought process going like this:
1. Wtf that's not right
2: Oh, I'm dreaming!
3. Finally, a lucid.. what to do first, what to do first?!
4. Man, this is crazy it all looks so real.. I cant believe Im really laying in my bed.
5. Wait a minute, *Feels the blankets and head resting on pillow*.. I am in my bed.. Damn hypnagogic imagery.. Bleh, time to try again.
That might sound.. weird. But its just the case for me. Very often I will still be dreaming. I believe spontaneous False awakenings can happen without really 'feeling' like you woke up from anything. Its the same thing like in nightmares, if you see a spooky/dark corner or something and you start going "Oh man I hope there isnt a crazy rabid leprechaun in there.." there usually will be.
