Musical Composing in LD's?

I'm an amateur musician, and one of the reasons why I want to learn to become lucid is because it seams like I might be able to come up with more creative pieces while I'm lucid. This is because I have had two regular dreams in the past where I have seen a band playing a song, except they are playing a song that has never been written. And they were actually very good pieces of music that I could have easily made into legit songs. Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" came to him in a dream btw. Just wondering if anyone has tried composing music in a lucid or if you think it can be done.

I'm pretty sure it can be done. I don't know how well you'd be able to actually write the music, seeing as it's pretty hard to read and write in dreams, but I think you could come up with a song and make it play in your LD, then write out the music when you wake up.

I've never done it myself, though that's because I'm not a composer, and it would take me a while to get anything besides the basic melody..

If you achieve this, you should post a recording of the music you've created here, it would be interesting to check out.

omg! There's a member on DV who did this. They composed a song with lyrics during a LD, recorded it, emailed it to me and it made me bawl my eyes out! It's amazing. I've texted them about this thread!

I believe you could have a dream where you wrote a song or part of it, but theres no recording and emailing from a dream to real life.
The real task would be trying to remember the entire piece after you've woken up.

I guess you could, if you know what all the notes and chords sound like.

What I do each day is play all the chords from C to B flat on an electronic keyboard, and play the note in which the chord is named. So if it is an A chord, I play the A note. Then I go onto A sharp/B flat, then B, and so on and so forth. If you can recognize them in your head, I'm sure you could do it in your dream.

I remember seeing that thread but i dont remember what the name of it was. Can you give me a link? I really want to hear that guy's songs.

Clegg, like everyone else has stated, it is truly possible to compose music in your dreams. I've never actually created music while lucid. During normal dreams, however; I heard magnificent music that I've never heard before, and awakened with the tunes stuck in my head on several occasions.

I'll admit that I'm not very musically inclined, and I've never taken the initiative to capitalize on any of these occurances. I'm sure someone like yourself would have no problem accomplishing the feat though. Good luck.

Sorry, Hercuflea I'm not sure what thread you mean. My post is referring to a personal friend of mine who is a member on here and who sent me the song file recently. Unfortunately they're probably going to be too shy to post in here but I just wanted the OP to know that yes you can compose music in a lucid dream. I would have been very skeptical but my friend has done it and the song is simply beautiful.

I found the song particularly moving knowing that it had been composed during a LD because I am so passionate about LD myself.

Guy has quite the different style of music.

I have had a few musical experiences in dreams.

After reading someones comment here about "play guitar like a god", i had that dream last night. I kept trying to play Metallica's Enter Sandman, (i used to play guitar when i was younger) but the tunes coming out were way cooler and original. My recall is still not good and yeah that will be the hard part.

The other one that springs to mind was waking up in a panic hearing really violent death metal. Not cool.

Try putting on some low volume ambient, like Pink Floyd or Enigma as you go to sleep, might get the Audio part of your brain working.

Personally i am more interested in visual art, any idea's on how to trigger / create visuals in dreams??

Oi.

Happened the other night.

Was at a concert (in the dream) and the on-stage band was playing some sort of acoustic song.

Then there was a growl, some monster things came over the hill behind me, and the band immediately switched to blastbeats.

I laughed my head off after I woke up.

Was kinda cool :D

How's that an advertisement for dream-composing? His arbitrary noises could have been made by anyone; awake, asleep or in a coma.

It's an interesting concept however, as it appears that we are capable of a lot more than we can consciously access. It does appear that having direct access to our subconscious opens up extraordinary new channels of creativity.

Two of the famous examples are Yesterday, already mentioned, and Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata, which came to him in a non-lucid dream. He immediately woke and attempted to jot the whole thing down but was so disappointed with his poor re-creation that he felt like giving up music altogether.

I'd be worried that if I came up with something in a dream, it would turn out to be plagarised from something I'd heard years ago and forgotten about.

Yeah there was a thread on this forum from a guy who posted links to his recordings of music he composed in LD's. Unfortunately i dont remember what the thread name was or the OP.

If it's possible, then I certainly don't have what it takes. If I can barely remember something I composed a few minutes ago without recording it and listening to it later, there's no way in hell I'll be able to remember something from a friggin' dream, lucid or not.

Personally, I'd think that getting used to performing music in front of people would be better time spent with one's LDs than composing it.

Repeat to yourself "I will recall this melody when I wake up" and wake yourself up (in the "teleported to bed" fashion). I managed to remember about four measures with this method p;

Here's an example of what I meant.

Imagine a piano.
On that piano, you have several keys.

You would need to ASSIGN the proper note and tone to the keys you're going to press somehow.
If you were playing Chopsticks in the key of 'E' ( Four sharps :O ), you wouldn't be pressing the 'G' and 'F' keys repeatedly like you would if you were playing it in the key of G.

Am I making sense here?? :S

ill tell u what it defenitly works... i had a dream i was doing jui jistu which i do in real life and i used different techniques in my dream it wasnt a lucid dream but very vivid and the moves in my dream made me improve in real llife

No...? If you expect it to work like a real piano, presumably your mind will recall which notes each key produces.

It's a magic piano. Just press the keys, and it plays the melody you want it to. :s

That's something I've wanted to try - playing an instrument I can't play. I tried singing the other night; can't remember if it worked or not.

Actually I was being polite so you didn't feel stink. The original statement did make sense. Well at least it would to anyone with an IQ larger than a fruitfly's :P It should only take a neuron or three to figure out that the recording and emailing was done after waking. Obviously you can't record and email a song while dreaming and have it be received by someone in RL! Although no doubt some of the kookies in Beyond Dreaming would debate that! ;)

Why not just laugh at yourself once in a while? :lol: After all, it is quite funny!

bro i think that's an awesome idea that i've thought of doing myself. but i think the thing youd need to concentrate on is remembering the song. i find when i write songs IRL i remember them gud as if i play them. for example ill get a melody when i'm in bed but if i dont play them on the guitar then i forget them. coz i memba what frets etc so mayb giv it a play in the dream. make sure you really remember it. mayb even try autosuggestion in the dream saying youll remember it when you wake up. otherwise it's awesome idea but yea just have a plan before you do it to avoid being pissed off when you wake up haha

im an amateur muso as well. ive played original songs (i play guitar) in nonlucid dreams and been able to remember them when i wake. the key is to get straight onto the guitar and play it, then write it down. it helps to play it before you write, keeps it fresher and then you dont get gaps, missing bars and such.

yes it can be done, it's a good way to get past writer's block but the problem is recalling what u have written in ur dream - i've been playing various instruments since i was 3, been playing bass for 20yrs, guitar and singing for about 14yrs and in bands for about 16 or so, didn't start writing until picked up the guitar...

i've had lucid dreams where i wrote lyrics and was able to recall a majority when i woke up, i have came up with guitar riffs & bass lines and even played shows at fictional venues with my band where we played songs i had written in the dream on the way to the show and re-played shows where i fixed previous mistakes, like deja-vu in a dream...

if i can think of any that i have recorded that were lucid i will post 'em - if u want a link to my band's myspace then PM me...

Nah I think the 'fail' was quite in order.

HAVE to remember in my next LD to get out the baton and conduct.

I think it can be done. I've written poetry in dreams...but i forget if it was lucid or not.

I would love to compose music in an LD! that is a top goal of mine! I can not wait to try it.

Anyway... My recall has been fading lately... I want to try this, but I don't know if it will be a wasted LD. :( It's hard for me to remember dream melodies even with good recall...

i asked another musician if he experienced that and he has, he does the same thing - writing riffs and playing shows, he said he can remember his new shit tho...

LOL, if you don't like electronic music, that's okay.
But this is a really dumb ass comment as you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
If it's not your style, fine, say it sucks, fine, but don't make stupid comments like this.
This guy is a Master and has done a lot for electronic music. Way ahead of the rest (or at least used to be)

As for composing, I'd like to try it sometime.
Maybe practice standing in front of a large room, 'cause I still have some anxiety problems playing for people. :oops:

My third lucid dream (which happend to me yesterday) had music playing in it. You see I was at this dance club and there was this stereo playing music. It had music but no singing. I don't think the song that was playing is invented yet. I started dancing in my dream to the music. No one was dancing with me. So I (since I was lucid) started singing to myself "I'm dancing with myself" from the song I'm dancing with myself. Then eveybody there starts doing the irish jig behind my back in rows, which I find funny. I think it was the first time I ever had music in my lucid dream, a dream for that matter.
