      Shadow Person taunting me

ok so i have never posted here before but have been lovingly lurking in the background reading all your stories. Enlightening.

Anyway, i have only had 3 lucids. the first only lasted about 5 seconds ending in a witch like lady telling me not to enter. the second was a fantastic 10-15 min totally lucid peaceful, meaningful, and exciting lucid. the third was last night.

i was dreaming about a field (a lot like the one in the end of gladiator) not lucid yet. i noticed a few strands of grass were bluish and realized i was dreaming. i became immediately completely lucid. i was very excited but didnt loose lucidity at all. i was just walking around the tall grass and a few bright red buildings. i noticed a black object in my peripheral, thinking it is nothing i continue. i keep seeing this shadow out of the corners of my eyes and every so often it gets braver entering my center field of vision but never slow enough to make it out as a person or what not. then a black measuring cup showed up right in front of my face. i tried to move it but couldnt and it kept growing. the shadow person kept running around scary types of movements and i got freaked. i woke up and couldnt move. my wife and dog were laying in the bed with me and i could barely get out my wifes name. i whispered her name a few times and then a black hand came over my face. i was absolutely terrified thinking somehow a demon or something had followed me....i had had a false awakening and paralysis in the false awakening. the black hand woke me and i was in a wet sweat....very scary, very real and i really dont know if i want to try luciding again for a while.

      Hey poopman! Welcome to DV.

I hope that this doesn't discourage you from LDing, as it seems that you can definitely obtain it.

First off, you may want to realize that you can have nightmares in any dream. Being lucid shouldn't increase your number of nightmares- if it seems as if your LDs increase the frequency of bad dreams it is likely because LDs are more memorable so you have a higher chance to remember bad lucid dreams than remember a bad regular dream.

Actually, being lucid is often used to combat nightmares. If you are fully lucid and understand the implications of being in a dream, you should be able to recognize that this shadow being can be dispelled/ignored. (even though this is not always the case, as people are usually irrational in the face of fear.)

But with increased lucid experience and better dream control you should be able to defeat your dream foes. I will work on a possible explanation, (not a dream interpretation,) as to why this occured so it may be easier to combat.

EDIT: Okay, I think it went like this. Your dreams are simply your thoughts, right? It is a realm of your thoughts. So, when you saw a shadow in the corner of your eye- you didn't know what it was. (It wasn't anything at this point. Had you thought that it was the shadow of a unicorn, it would have been the shadow of a unicorn.) Obviously, you spent some time dwelling on the shadow. So, naturally, it showed up again. Somewhere along the line you thought of this shadow as being a person. That frightened you, so the shadow figure reacted appropriately with hostility. After your false awakening you were still considering the shadow figure- still thinking about him- so he showed up again. It's that simple, I think. And it's nothing to make you apprehensive about LDing, (even though your fear is understandable.)

I'd go with this, LaBerge described a same situation in EWOLD.

I've tried the same thing man, it was not in a lucid dream, but in a nightmare. My demon was a black shadow with an orange glow around it. At the very of my dream, he was reflected upon the ceiling, and the memory terrified me for the rest of the night, and the picture came whenever I closed my eyes for more than 2 seconds. The thing is, the demon didn't do anything scary, it was just there. Don't stop LDing, you will come over the demon in time, and he will only return if you keep fearing him.
