This is a positive dream.
A recurring dream often means that the Psyche is trying to tell us something.
But before we get into the dream, we need a little background on Analytical Psychology --
According to Carl Jung, the Psyche (or the mind, as we think of it) consists of the consciousness and the unconscious. At the center of the Psyche is an archetype called the Self.
1. The consciousness consists of those things that we know. For example, I know that I am typing on a computer. The ego is at the center of the consciousness.
2. The unconscious contains the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious. A journey downwards or into a cave, or a fall – perhaps into a well -- is usually symbolic of a journey into the unconscious – especially the collective unconscious. This is a good.
a. The personal unconscious contains those things that we used to know but I have since forgotten. For example, I forgot when I first ate pizza.
b. The collective unconscious contains those things that we never knew. The collective unconscious is the source of archetypes.
i. But what are archetypes? “Carl Jung understood archetypes as universal, archaic patterns and images that derive from the collective unconscious and are the psychic counterpart of instinct.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungian_archetypes We can never know the true meaning or have a complete understanding of an archetype. Therefore, we can never have a complete understanding of any dreams that contains archetypes.
ii. There are all kinds of archetypes. An archetype can be a shape, an object, a plant, an animal, a person or even an event. The Self is the most developed archetype.
iii. The people in the dream are almost certainly symbols of archetypes from the collective unconscious.
Back to the dream --
In this dream, the dreamer probably represents the ego.
The boulder is a symbol of the Self. “Stones are frequent images of the Self (because they are complete—i.e. unchanging—and lasting).” https://monoskop.org/images/9/97/Von...mbols_1988.pdf page 206
If the boulder is round, this would be another indication that it symbolizes the Self. In our dreams, the harder stones, such as granite, have more of a spiritual symbolism while softer stones, such as limestone, have more of a materialistic symbolism.
The dreamer’s fall means that the dreamer has gone into the realm of the unconscious. Such a fall is almost always a good sign. As Jung wrote, “There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/549...in-people-will
It is by a journey into the darkness of the underworld that we bring light to the darkness and make it conscious.
Hope this helps.
