      Antagonistic view point

I believe that an enormous amount of time and energy is spent trying to maintain an antagonistic point of view while exchanging words with a complete stranger on these particuliar websites. I used to think I was pretty clever and that my asshole remarks were somehow contributing to the overall betterment of those individuals who take whatever the situation I was ragging on to heart. I've done this for over a year now and I have noticed that my remarks didn't always hit the intended target as I had planed, instead they spawned completely new ideas/threads from members I hadn't previously anticipated would even give a damn what I was saying, or bitching about. I would then read these mutated thoughts and desperately try to throw my 2 cents in only to have it thrown back with a little extra in hopes I would just go away.

It was then I realized that no matter what my true intentions were, they could never compare to the overwhelming desire of other readers to out bid me. I now believe the nature[s] of my whole existence/thoughts online are so far beyond any trivial value I could possibly assign to them that it must be supernatural. After all, isn't that what Philosophy is - A structured account of personal beliefs presented in all their bias glory?

This is where that Antagonistic point of view comes into play. If I present you [the reader] with just enough bullshit to keep you interested, have I not done my job? That is Philosophy my friends, well at least it's mine.

      What do you think?

Uhhhh.....I don't know what specific posts/debates you're talking about but

I'm tired of the whole "antagonist" attitude in general, anywhere and everywhere. Way too many people just whine whine, bitch, complain or are just straight out apathetic. Okay, I could live with that. If people want to be apathetic, not care, fine.

But a line is drawn when those same people think that they can use their bad attitude and mix it with "intelligent conversations". What you end up with is an argument filled with insults, witty remarks, and line after line meant to degrade the other individual. The conversation isn't even a conversation, it's not even a debate, it's just a childish desire to prove that you're smarter and better than other people. To make someone else feel like an idiot.

A friend of mine is obsessed with debating. He goes to websites and forums specifically for debating about anything. He shares with me his debate style. One, he doesn't care about the subject matter. Two, he doesn't care that the other person cares. Three, he doesn't care to understand what the other individual is trying to communicate. And four, he tears apart their grammar and "proves them wrong" by researching the history of words and their original meaning, even if the common meaning of the word today bares no resemblance to this historical meaning.

He grins and laughs, believing he's proved these individuals as idiots. (yeah right)

Listen, language is abstract. Its made up. It's a medium to convey meaning, concepts and ideas. People are idiots when they base their entire argument on the medium-ship of meaning, concepts and ideas, usually for the sole purpose of sounding superior.

One time I was describing how a biologist explained to his audience in layman terms, that DNA has to first "unzip" because it's covered with a "sleeve". The biologist is a professor. I mean, thats what teachers do. They find funny ways to help people understand something complex. He completed his lesson with a video of DNA "unzipping" and rolling down his sleeve.

It wasn't an argument, because it's just textbook science. It was just a background detail in my post. But one poster decided to treat me like an idiot for using a laymans term, "the unzipping of DNA" because OBVIOUSLY DNA doesn't actually "unzip". I'm an idiot for saying it does, the biologist professor is an idiot for saying it does and I committed some unholy crime for not using the more proper description of how DNA "unzips".

You know I don't even remember what word they used to describe DNA. But both words conveyed the SAME MEANING!

But that's what debate idiots do. They don't care to understand the concept or the idea that people are trying to convey or express, they're just out to feel superior because they have serious issues. Good for you if you decide not to be one of them.

      Sounds like username drewterry.

This unfortunately is the only logical way to fake an intelligent conversation, but in our defense you and yours are all to willing to cross that line you mentioned with only the slightest of hesitations.
