I think my mind is wired a bit differently in how it encodes its metaphors. The dark parts don't automatically represent something "negative" for me, unless the entire work suggests that what is being obscured is actually negative. My first response to darkness is to associate it with mystery. It's endlessly appealing to me, the thrill of not knowing. Until a light is shined on a dark area, it can be as fantastic as I want. But, like I said, if what actually is illuminated in the piece suggests that what is obscured is fearful, that's how I'll take it. |

“Look at every path closely and deliberately, then ask ourselves this crucial question: Does this path have a heart? If it does, then the path is good. If it doesn't, it is of no use.” - Carlos Castaneda
Here's a photo I took a while ago. Very simple, the moon against a black sky; yet I love the way it looks, light fog/clouds gave it a sort of shining/halo effect, and the camera captured it pretty well, despite some blur on the moon itself. It looks sort of, unnatural almost, although I didn't edit the image at all. |
