What can change the nature of a man?

Just pondering the question "What can change the nature of a man?" By 'man' I don't mean just males I am using it as a broad term for both genders.I want you opinion on this. My opinion is that BELIEFS change the nature of a man. Beliefs can turn a person that is over weight into a much more slimmer person. Beliefs can turn a criminal into an outstanding citizen, Our entire society and the way things run are all influenced by our beliefs. And as we age and grow our beliefs change and as these beliefs change so do we as a person change. This is my opinion on what changes our nature. What do you think changes the nature of a person?

Beliefs certainly, but before that, also instincts.
Say that two persons don't believe in cannibalism, and are locked up in a room together without any food, you will most likely see both of them resort to cannibalism quickly because of their survival instinct, despite that it's against their beliefs. In fact, you might be surprised how quickly a man can change into a beast.

Of course, in our civilized society, instincts like that aren't really that prevalent. Or at least not directly.

You got a point there but have you considered a mans willpower? Some are weak willed and resort to their base instincts quickly but wouldn't a strong willed person resolve to find another way?

      You'd be surprised.
Probably some of course, but I'd say that's rare.

Well. What would you do if you were in the situation you described about being locked into the room.

No, actually. Studies have found (don't ask me which studies. I heard it in a documentary during a psychology class.) that humans will do almost anything to survive, with the exception of cannibalism and some other thing.

A lobotomy can do it. Or a tamping iron, of course.
