      Who's yor favorite Philosopher (???)

      Who' Your Favorite Philosopher (???)

      Dear Philosophers

Over the next year my archetype (deep-inner-me) will die and the gestating new archetype will draw breath (get born).

The dying archetype is Persephone. The gestating archetype is "the king of the Centaurs "Chiron".

His influence is to (first-up) push outer-me to "seek answers of a philosophical kind. This may emergeas the study of a particular system of philosophy or as a deep commitment to a quest for meaning in life." (page 35 The New Mythic Tarot)

You can reply in my "sensless banter" if you prefer.

      Philosoph 3 - Lecture 1 ( to 3:52)

(01:30) The readings for this class are, for example, this next reading is, O, wer're stating out with Decart's Meditations and in particular the 7th and the 6th meditations. The readings for this class are all quite short. That's not to make the class easy. These are all quite difficult readings.

      (01:58)

When you take any of the readings that we'll lbe doing you will find that the first time that you read them it's very hard to make head or tail of what is going on.

You'll get to the end and you will stare into the distance. You will experience a strong desire to sleep.

At that point you have to stick with it.

You have to go back to the beginning and start again

      and

You have to have faith both that the reading does make sense and not only does make sense but is actually mind-blowing when you get what is going on and that you can crack-it.

So, I just warn you right now that even though all the readings are relatively brief they all take quite a lot of work to make sense of.

      (2:50)

Idealy you read the reading before the lecture. You go to the lecture. After the lecture you do the reading again. Then you go to "Section" and you discuss the reading. And you come back from the "section" and ... guess what you do ... You do the reading again, that very same 10 pages.

So let me just warn you about the nature of the reading we're doing.

So, for Wednesday September the 5th what you really want to do is

Make sure you have fully mastered these extracts (...)(3:23)

(3:41) But what I want to do today is say something about the background against which Dacart was writing. (3:52)

I will open a new thread called "Section DebraJane" because at the end of his 1st of 27 Philosophy, University Lectures he asks his students to form study-groups (sections) to meet and discuss "readings".

Unable to open that thread due to new changes to our site, Dreamviews so I'll post what I would had posyed there, here. for now.

      StudyGroup "Section"

Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes

Meditation 1 - Of the things that we may doubt:

Descartes, Rene - Meditations on First Philosophy

I have to include Meditation 1 even though the required reading is only meditation 2 and 6 because meditation 2 begins like this.

      (1) The meditation of yesterday has filled my mind with so many doubts, that it is no longer in my power to forget them. (...)
So folk, let us read and discuss:

Meditation (1) called "Of the things of which we may Doubt"

Descartes, Rene - Meditations on First Philosophy

      then the required readings:

      (2) OF THE NATURE OF THE HUMAN MIND; AND THAT IT IS MORE EASILY KNOWN THAN THE BODY

Descartes, Rene - Meditations on First Philosophy

      and

      (6) OF THE EXISTENCE OF MATERIAL THINGS, AND OF THE REAL DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE MIND AND BODY OF MAN

Descartes, Rene - Meditations on First Philosophy

Oh, and here is the link to the first of 27 Lectures.

Philosophy 3 "The Nature of Mind

I will say in my childish way what I think Descart is trying to convey:

      (2) He is saying, "I'm not gunna waste my time proving that everything I hold True, is false. But if in each of my beliefs I find a Doubt, I will analyse the Principle on which the belief rests.

      (3) My beliefs come to me throuhh my senses. But, my senses can decieve me.

      (4) I admit that my senses can decieve me concerning the very big, the very small and the very far away.

      But

It is impossible for me to doubt that I am siting by the fire, in my dressing gown, holding this piece of paper.

      But

How can I be so sure of that when there are people in mental hospitals convinced that they are Bat Man, etcetera.

      (5) Ummm

      When I sleep, I dream.

In my dream I might be as convinced that I am Bat Man while asleep the same way a mad man is convinved he is Bat Man in waking life.

I perceive so clearly that there exist no certain marks by which the state of waking can ever be distinguished from sleep, that I feel greatly astonished;*

      (6) Our reality is former only in our consciousness.

      (7) Objects only seem corporeal.

      (8) The sciences of Physics, Astronomy, Medicine, etcetera are doubtfull.

Only arithmatic and geometry etcetera are certain and indupitable ( in dupe it able).

      because

A square has 4 sides whether I'm awake or dreaming.

I don't understand the (below) 9th parsgraph. So here it is copied and broken-up for easier study. It is 11:50pm Thurs 29-Nov here. I will sleep on it and put it in my own words tomorrow, if I can.

      9. "Nevertheless,

the belief that there is a God who is all powerful,

and who created me, such as I am,

[b]has, [-b]for a long time, obtained steady possession of my mind.

How, then, do I know that he has not arranged that there should be neither earth, nor sky, nor any extended thing, nor figure, nor magnitude, nor place,

providing at the same time, however, for the rise in me of the perceptions of all these objects,

and] the persuasion that these do not exist otherwise than as I perceive them ?

And further, as I sometimes think that others are in error respecting matters of which they believe themselves to possess a perfect knowledge,

how do I know that I am not also deceived each time I add together two and three,

or number the sides of a square,

or form some judgment still more simple, if more simple indeed can be imagined?

But perhaps Deity has not been willing that I should be thus deceived,

for he is said to be supremely good.

      If, however, it were repugnant to the goodness of Deity to have created me subject to constant deception, it would seem likewise to be contrary to his goodness to allow me to be occasionally deceived;

and yet it is clear that this is permitted."

I don't get it! but if I still don't get it in the morning I will move-on to paragraph (10).

here is a link to all 12 paragraghs of Meditation 1.

I suppose Rene Descartes would be my favorite because rationalism and such, but I would say for my daily life Alan Watts is most influential through his audio recordings.

I believe that there he is talking about doubting scientific and mathematical knowledge of the world. He is referencing the possibility of an "evil spirit" that is deceiving all of humanity by making mathematics appear to be objective knowledge. This caused him to even doubt mathematics in his philosophy. In other words, he said that mathematics must be doubted because it is possible that we are being deceived through it.

Someone tell me if I am on the right track.
