Patience Grasshopper! But seriously we just got the ability to land on the moon about 40yrs ago. We haven't been doing this too long its going to take at least another half century or even longer before they start colonizing on Mars or the Moon.

From what I understand, Bush is planning on developing a mining colony on the moon much sooner than that.

      I'll bet your write

One good thing about this topic is that no one has an answer. therefore no one can dicredit your philoshpy.
Awhile ago a had a post about using 10 % of your brain. Most of the replies were that everyone thinks we use a lot more. We problably do. But maybe that large space we don't use is set aside for that answer or maybe i am talking out my@%$#^.

Well, my two cents is a bit late, so I haven't taken time to read every previous post.
But I'm actually quite interested in these types of discussions - quantum theory is very fascinating.

Some believe the universe, collectively, can be somewhat considered a "white hole". Just as a black hole theoretically swallows everything in its proximity, a white hole constantly spits out matter. So the widely accepted idea is that the universe is more of a flat plane that is ever-expanding...and could eventually become too unstable and recollapse. (notice I said "recollapse")

Schwarzschild's theory says that the universe consists of one white hole and one black hole connected at their horizons by a wormhole. So, in theory, they reciprocally cycle matter. Possible, but not likely a stable existence - it violates the "second law of thermodynamics".

Of course, most things like blackholes, wormholes and the like are mere calculated guesses...I'm fairly certain we've seen VERY little of what we claim to potentially exist. But I wouldn't doubt that there are these things out there somewhere...

Whatever, I'm just transcribing things I've read - I don't actually know all this... go here if you want a better, more interesting read!

      Yay for quantum theory!

What of dark matter? They know it is there but cannot prove it. Could this pertain to the asteral plain? Scientest cannot explain how the mass of the universe does not add up to the amount of matter in it thus calling it bkack matter. Could this be conciousness floating around?

Yea I agree, but that's where I think space companies like NASA should be privatized, cause the government doesn't have enough backing to seriously pursue something like space colonization.

Yea I agree, but that doesn't mean that the people that are actually honest and good shouldn't get a chance to explore the wonders of the universe, and allow their posterity a second chance to build better worlds, or even to survive at all. We shouldn't doom civilization and humankind to waste away with the planet.

Lol! Grasshopper! Anyway I don't think it's the lack of talent and ability for humans to space travel. Think about it, back when Kennedy was president, the U.S. had barely gotten one person into space, and only for a very short period. But because Kennedy convinced the people that a moon landing is important to the US, there actually was one. This was an astonishing advancement from a barely successful and simple orbit excursion of 6 miles above, to a successful to and return travel to a body 239,000 miles away in only a decade! Proving that humans can accomplish anything if they should so set their minds to it and have the right motivation. In short, its not because humans are not able or don't have the technology, but a lack of ambition and incentive.

Yea he is! I think its a step in the right direction, especially since the moon contains many of the resources, including hydrogen, needed for farther travel out of the solar system. I read an article today about how humans plan to get to an Earth-like planet should one be discovered. The four ways proposed were: fission, fusion, anti-matter, and laser-sailing. Most of which are conceivable (I have doubts about the anti-matter). Supposely with laser-sailing, a craft can be sent to Alpha Centurai in 14.3 years! (It's like 4+ light years away). And they almost have the life sustaining research completed. (Most likely an one way journey though) It was a quite intresting read.

      I definately am, thanks Howetzer.

On another note I believe it is highly possible and I agree the ambition is just not there. I've heard about bush Space plans for the next few years or so but I can recall Regan making some astronomical plans also Star Wars ring a bell to anyone? What ever happened to that? I don't doubt Bush's plan but first things first. Im just not too comfortable with the whole Idea until we can have a sure way of keeping our Shuttles from exploding, they need to start an entire new line of Space traveling, New Space Ships, because I seriously think its time to send all of those shuttles to the Scrap Heap. But it would be a wonderful idea to colonize. I would want to live on the moon. I think it would be pretty cool.

They say there are several universes stacked upon one another.
"For a long time, the big question was whether there was enough matter in the universe to make it recollapse, or whether it would expand forever. But in the late 1990's, astronomical observations began to suggest that the expansion of the universe is actually speeding up!
Let's suppose this is true, and let's assume the most popular explanation for it: namely, that there is a nonzero cosmological constant. A cosmological constant with the right sign makes the energy density of the vacuum positive, but makes its pressure negative - and 3 times as big. This makes the universe tend to expand. Normal matter makes the universe tend to recollapse. If the effect of the cosmological constant ever beats out the effect of normal matter, the universe will keep expanding, making the density of normal matter less... so the cosmological constant will ultimately win hands down, and the universe will eventually expand at an almost exponential rate." -John Baez

hmm, sounds like dark matter is good though...we need it to balance the mass of the universe.

"Is there a copy of you reading this? A person who is not you but who lives on a planet called Earth, with misty mountains, fertile fields and sprawling cities, in a solar system with eight other planets? The life of this person has been identical to yours in every respect. But perhaps he or she now decides to put down this article without finishing it, while you read on.
The idea of such an alter ego seems strange and implausible, but it looks as if we will just have to live with it, because it is supported by astronomical observations. The simplest and most popular cosmological model today predicts that you have a twin in a galaxy about 10 to the 1028 meters from here. This distance is so large that it is beyond astronomical, but that does not make your doppelgänger any less real. The estimate is derived from elementary probability and does not even assume speculative modern physics, merely that space is infinite (or at least sufficiently large) in size and almost uniformly filled with matter, as observations indicate. There are infinitely many other inhabited planets, including not just one but infinitely many that have people with the same appearance, name and memories as you, who play out every possible permutation of your life choices...." -Max Tegmark, ScientificAmerican.com

In nearly-infinite space, I guess even the most unlikely occurrences must take place somewhere... But can you all think of what we could potentially achieve?? Someday we will be able to traverse outerspace much like we go to the supermarket...I fear if we survive long enough to reach such levels of our infinite potential that we might seriously learn too much..!

by saying "infinity" one has already placed a 'bound' upon something truly incomprehensible to all human logic, although a few humans have managed to percieve it, they can never EXPLAIN it, because it is impossible to make finite the infinite

so I'm gonna say ALL of these answers R "half-baked"

      don't mess with me, i'm a rhetorician

Recently I've been meditating on this idea.
So I'm just gonna add my opinion. Infinity is a concept. There is no positive and negative infinity ( like in math). In fact you can find infinity if you will travel beyond borders of universe, or if you will divide atom particles. Infinity is like a loop.

So I have this theory - our universe can be just an atom particle in some larger universe. Which in turn is an atom particle in some even larger universe. And eventually it becomes a loop...

Eep why didnt I find this thread a while ago.
These things interest me LOADS, which is why I read lots of science fiction, and hey, look at my sig/av

Now, lets assume for a seccond we have a spaceship that can do anything. Or perhaps you are your own concious floating around.

Now, take your ultra spaceship. Lets go visit one of those many galaxies.
Visit them all, no time passes. There's so many, and some might look like exact copies. Could be. There's only so many ways to sort your atoms. There are so many galaxies, and if the mass is 'equally' distributed by the big bang, and it definetely seems so because of all the galaxies we've observed, there could be some 'copies'. Who knows? There's a lot.

Our planet revolves around our sun. Our sun is part of a cluster of suns. They revolve in our galaxy.

Travel further. Go so far, untill you cant see any more galaxies ahead of you.

Now, look back. What do you see? Perhaps a massive 'galaxy of galaxies'? Pretty interesting.

Travel even further. Would you see more galaxies of galaxies?
      Perhaps.

Shrink. Grow smaller and smaller, then observe a random stone or something. The stone seems solid. Grow smaller, ever smaller. You see the molecules. The stone is now a collection of small things. Shrink. The molecules, they consist of even smaller parts. Shrink. Atoms. They consist of small stuff. Shrink. Quarks. Look at them. Are they solid? Shrink, and observe.

Expand. Grow bigger and bigger. Stuff, quarks, atoms, molecules, stone, nebula, planets, stars, clusters, galaxies. Stuff. Galaxies of galaxies. Grow bigger, bigger then the galaxies themselves. Even bigger. Expand, keep on expanding.

What do you see now? Small things. Grow bigger. More small things. Expand. Grow bigger. These things group. They seem to be like atoms, or quarks, or something. Expand more, and keep on expanding. What will you see? Its another stone? A planet, star, galaxy?

Since I've started to meditate, I've thought about this, and I have to say...

I'm becoming more and more of a teleologist every day...

Changed my mind, with my "eternal fluctuation" theory I've created in my head, that basically is infinity... If the string theory is infact correct, then dimensions are pounding on each other, and every time they do, we have a big bang...

You know what's strange I noticed? There are layers of dimensions in the string theory just like in the Astral dimensions...

Maybe when you reach a certain level of projection you are travelling through these dimensions?

When We think of space we Think of Planets, suns, Quazars, comits, Galexsies, black holes & a ton of other things. But Maybe somewhere out there there is true space. Places where light has not reached yet traveling at 186,000 miles per second for billions of years. Now thats out there.
Think We'll ever get some type of signal from afar (contact)?

Perhaps. Maybee not in our galaxy, who knows?
If they find that there where really traces of life on mars however, I'd think that the chances will improve drastically, because it would probably mean that if the conditions are right for life, life will eventually appear.

Jodie Foster in the movie Contact said it in a very appropriate manner, "If one in a million stars had planets, and if one in a million had a planet with the right conditions, and if one in a million of those actually spawned life, then there would be absolutely millions and millions of civilisations out there."
